Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When you're looking for a guitar teacher, make sure you find someone who has a flexible approach, is willing to teach you the songs and styles you want, and someone with plenty of experience in both teaching and performing. There are lots of ways to learn the guitar or bass, but you might as well do it while learning the songs/styles you love - it's more fun that way!

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There are lots of guitar teachers out there, but there aren't too many who have thousands of pages of tablature ready to print, the ability to slow down music so you can start slow and build up your speed, and who give you complete control over which direction you want to go with your lessons. A good teacher should be able to transcribe any song you want to learn, teach it to you, and also provide you with additional insight about the techniques used in the song.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Make sure you ask a potential guitar teacher about his/her performing and teaching experience, approach toward teaching, rescheduling and payment policies, and availability. It's also important to find a teacher who is willing to teach you what you really want to learn instead of just teaching you from a book or teaching you the same way he/she teaches everyone else.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Before contacting me, make sure you have the equipment you need (see my site for recommendations), know what your availability is (which days of the week work and at which times), know how long a lesson you want (half hour or hour), and know when you are ready for your first lesson (please wait to request a lesson time until a week or two before you want to start).

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. My guitar lessons stand out because I can get you through the fundamentals quickly so you can start playing the songs you really want to play much faster. I customize every lesson based on the student's learning style, goals, and favorite kinds of music. My studio is a great learning environment with tons of guitars, amps, effects, recording equipment, and a huge iTunes & sheet music (tablature) library. When you're working on a song with me, you'll get a cd with several slowed-down versions of the song to practice along with so you can start slow and gradually build up your speed. My students regularly go on to play in bands, at school, at church, and also get into the most reputable music schools. For example, in 2010 one of my students won a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music, and another landed a record deal with Sony.
