Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: The dog training field is a largely unregulated industry. Anyone wishing to call themselves a "professional trainer" or "behaviorist" is able to do so, regardless of their experience, knowledge, or skill. Unlike most trainers in our area, I am endorsed through a national animal training organization, the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. My CPDT-KA designation means that I have completed over 300 hours of hands-on training; received letters of endorsement from my veterinarian, fellow colleagues, and former clients; and finally, passed a rigorous 4-hour standardized exam on the topics of animal behavior, teaching skills, and ethics. I am also a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), a trade organization providing continuing education for animal industry professionals. When you hire me, you can be sure you and your pet will receive the very best in professionalism, training knowledge, and practical skill. I absolutely love working with my clients and watching them see the results they have been waiting for with their dog! I enjoy seeing their relationship with their pet deepen and grow as they come to understand one another better. My job requires a lot of creativity, and on-the-spot problem solving. It really keeps me on my toes, and is never boring!

We are still working with Amanda and our dog, but so far the experience has been great! She drives to our home which is super convenient....and it makes the most sense since this is where the issues take place. Her initial free assessment was thorough and she really took the time to hear what we had to say. Through this, she figured out the underlying issue. Amanda went above and beyond for us. Our dog, Loretta, has been having difficulty with small children and tugging on clothing, etc. Amanda ordered a child-sized mannequin online and left it with us to assist with our training. She was always prompt, or if running late due to traffic, would shoot us a text to let us know. She is pretty flexible with her schedule and is always accommodating. So far it's been an enlightening experience and we look forward to more sessions in the future. We went past the initial 5 we paid for because we just wanted to be super thorough. I would highly recommend her to anyone!

Dog training for two high energy dogs! We brought home a husky mix puppy, Lilly, with a lot of personality and intensity. “She’s a handful” was what the foster said to me. Umm, that was putting it mildly. She was Tasmanian devil with gnashing teeth set out to destroy the world! Being responsible puppy owners, we attended puppy school, beginning, and intermediate training classes. Lilly performed well. However, many issues remained that left us feeling like our home was out-of-control. I made the call. Amanda responded right away and we set a date for her to meet us in our home for an hour for an evaluation of the dogs, cats, and the family members. In that first meeting, Amanda had a clear understanding of the issues we faced, and was able to present solutions that seemed reasonable, doable, and fun! We chose the package, and had follow-up sessions as well. What went well: Amanda’s service is superior! She has a way of putting everyone at ease. Everyone! The dogs were calmer, the cats, us. She brings a joyful quite presence to her work that is so helpful. The assigned homework was so easy and produced results that session. I still do many of the exercises every day. Amanda trained me so well that it feels like play, even though I know I am training my dogs each day too. There are so many examples of how Amanda helped us as our dog trainer. But, the most powerful statement I can make about her service is that the Return on Investment (ROI) is phenomenal! We have seen dramatic shifts away from unwanted behaviors, to enjoyable well-trained dogs in such a short span of time. The experience was and continues to be positive. We are so grateful to have had such good luck finding a trainer with the character and integrity of Amanda S. We think you will too.

Amanda is absolutely terrific. We called Amanda for help with basic training for our Labrador puppy starting at about 8 weeks old. Since we have two small children the idea of in-home training with our kids and the puppy in her own territory was ideal! We could not have asked for a better result. Amanda was super responsive and so nice to be around. Not only did Amanda help with the puppy basics but she also helped train the kids to know how to train, play and be safe around a young pup. She also gave us so many tips and tricks to work on even after training was done. Amanda was very patient and understanding with all of us novices to puppy training. Our dog responded extremely well to Amanda and her training drills are still being used now at 10.5 months. I would highly recommend Amanda - you won't be disappointed.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My CPDT-KA designation requires 12 hours of continuing education to be completed each year, through the form of animal training seminars and workshops. In addition, my membership in the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) keeps me up-to-date on the newest animal behavior developments.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

When looking to hire a dog trainer, make sure you thoroughly research their credentials and methods. Anyone can call themselves a "dog trainer", but many lack the knowledge, practical skill, and experience to solve the most common canine behavior problems. I recommend searching for trainers who belong to one of the national or international trade organizations (APDT and IAPDT being the most common) at the very least. Even better, look for a trainer with a CPDT-KA or CPDT-KSA designation, as this title is earned by trainers after demonstrating hands-on skills and knowledge through a rigorous vetting process.
