Thumbtack.com was a tremendous help to me in finding a videographer. I phoned several companies listed on this site, but after speaking with David Prentice of Defining Moment and seeing his work, my mind was made up. I was more than happy with my decision to use Defining Moment. I will happily refer them to anyone in need of videography.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure you understand what your goals are - if you are looking for cheap snapshots, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you are looking for someone to create art, you need a professional with a proven track record of creating solid images - not someone with a few good photos they can post online. Look at someone's work - if they have a few good photos that all look like they were taken at the same few events, you probably are dealing with someone who is not experienced, and is not likely to produce good results during your specific shoot.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. I would wish that I knew that just because someone has a large camera, doesn't mean they know how to use it. Don't pay for people's equipment - find someone who is talented and PAY FOR TALENT.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. "Can I see your work?"
"Can I see the photos you shot last week?"
"What photographic experience and education do you have?"
"Have you ever been employed by or hired to shoot for someone other than yourself?" (This is a key giveaway - anyone can buy a $600 camera, throw up a website, and pretend they are a photographer).
