About Dogs Ltd & Training

hired 1 time on Thumbtack

Dogs Ltd & Training is owned and operated by Linda West, CPDT-KA. West is a certified professional dog trainer and a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. West was formerly the in-house dog trainer for the Redmond Humane Society.

Dogs Ltd & Training is a full-service dog training facility that now offers the innovative dog training program of Day School for Dogs.

Day Care Training consistently produces excellent results. Owners experience the benefits of this unique training style. Dogs learn all the skills they need to make them good companions. Training takes place in the training facility, downtown Bend and on local trails. Dogs spend the day visiting our local parks, shops and other areas.

Your dog is trained multiple times per day, four days a week for three weeks. Owners receive three half hour training sessions at the end of each week to see their dog's progress and learn how to use the skills their dog learned. After the first week, owners are active participants in the program. Exercises covered in our basic course include heel and automatic sit, sit-stay, down-stay and come.

Your dog becomes familiar with trips to the groomer, crate training, socializing with people and dogs. Your dog will be comfortable in different environments. This includes being relaxed and happy in a boarding facility.

Your dog learns all the skills that are important to make him a great pet.

Graduates of the training program love being able to go everywhere with their best buddy.

We adopted our German Shorthaired Pointer, Lola, and put her first through 2 other obedience classes. We had some frustrations with these classes, so we booked individual training time with Linda. We learned tons of great new training techniques that Lola responded to immediately. We then started taking Lola to Linda's weekly Nature Camp. This has created even better result since Lola is confident meeting all kinds of different dogs now.
We just adopted another GSP, Kona. He seems to have no prior knowledge of any commands. Time for more training with Linda!

I found my self in search of help with my 4.5 year old Shepard mix rescue, Jax, after he and my other dog attacked a dog, without provocation. Accepting that Jax had become more and more aggressive over the last few years, and that my inability to deal with him was making it worse had me considering taking extreme measures. I decide I should at least seek help first, despite the financial strains. I found Linda's services to be very reasonably priced compared to others I had researched. More importantly, she put my guilt at ease. I found her methods humane and while not entirely effective due to his stubborn nature, Jax is easier to manage than he was before. I was given easy to follow guidelines by Linda and have a good foundation to continue working with him.
Linda was always kind and understanding, working around my crazy schedule and being flexible when I needed to reschedule appointments.

Sarah was a great client who listened well and applied training recommendations to achieve the best possible results. Jax has some temperament issues that are not going to be "cured" or "trained away." Sarah learned how to maintain control and the options for situations that are going to be challenging.

For some reason, Liz's comments would not post on the Thumbtack review page... but she did post them on Dogs Ltd & Training facebook page. Here is what she had to say:
"Jackson and I took a crash course from Linda. 6 days instead of 6 weeks. It was our first training class and I didn't know what to expect; we were put at ease from the beginning! She is wonderful with dogs and people too. Her class is easy to understand and her techniques work perfectly after class. Jackson is now calm on the leash and follows commands. I just wish we had done it sooner!"
Thank you, Liz, for letting me know about your experience. Linda

Linda is a very kind and compassionate trainer. She has a real understanding for dogs with aggression. My dog was attacking another dog in the house and they could not be anywhere near each other. Linda gave me, and my dog, the skills we needed to create peace in our house. Thank you Linda!

Linda W. from Dogs Ltd & Training replied to this review on September 11, 2012:

Thanks for the feedback. It is always wonderful to hear from a client about their experience. Kristen already had great training skills and timing before she contacted me. She just needed a little additional coaching to get past some specific problems. With that additional knowledge, she could be successful training with her dogs' issues. Good job!

My dog Scout could be very difficult while walking on the leash when we came across other dogs on and off their leashes. After 6 sessions with Linda I am able to walk Scout and manage her insecurity/aggression very well. This makes for much more enjoyable walks! Training with Linda was easy and fun.

I'm always happy to receive feedback from my clients! It's good to know how they felt about the training and if it worked for them.

Linda, I can't thank you enough for succeeding in changing Bella's attitude. We rescued Bella (my 86 lb Black and Tan Coonhound) from the Humane Society a little over 2 years ago. She was dumped by her prior owners at about 1 year old because "she was too much to handle." And, I have to admit, she definitely has been a challenge! She has a sweet disposition and is not aggressive, but had no impulse control and was very reactive in new situations. Bella has changed a lot over the last 2 years with all the classes we have taken, but yours really got her to turn the corner. Your techniques and knowledge would work with any dog, but your intimate knowledge of the hound personality was particularly helpful because you taught me what is possible to change about Bella's behavior and what is not. Bella and I are about to begin our second class with you -- as far as I'm concerned, this is frosting on the cake. After just 1 session in the first class, Bella was off the pinch collar (which I had been using for nearly 2 years) and on the gentle leader without pulling my arm off when I walk her! She's much calmer, and I think she's much happier not being so reactive to strange people, sounds, and dogs. Your desensitization strategy really works! Now my best buddy and I CAN and do go everywhere together.

After spending $$$$ with other professional dog trainers and not learning much, I decided to take my leash aggressive dog to Linda West. I found her method of training to be easy to follow and best of all fun. True, I have had a lot of obedience training experience so I knew that if I was to be successful, I would have to practice what my dog and I were taught during class sessions. I was taught simple little "games or tricks" to get my dog to concentrate on me during an encounter with a target. I learned how to remain calm and confident in my ability to be in control of my dog. Her instructions have helped me to enjoy our dog walks so much more. We work on our "games" every day and I find that my dog is so much calmer when I ask her to perform what we have learned from Linda's class. Thank you Linda

Linda West is a highly specialized and experienced dog trainer. I came to her initally having agression problems with my dog. She made valuable and correct assessments that prevented further dangerous situations. With another very stubborn dog, she made training so easy I couldn't believe it! I had tried doing these things on my own, then with 2 "economy" trainers. After just 15 minutes with Linda, I was elated. Linda's easy-to-follow and professional guidance made working with this stubborn dog really fun. I found the other trainers inconsistent and guessing. Linda, however, is knowlegable, consistent and very reliable. From being a client over the years I came to see some of the dogs with serious aggression she helped. I am still amazed when I think of the change in these dogs. If you've got a dog who has major aggression, a slight issue, or you just want the best basic training, Linda is your best resource in Bend.
She is safe, consistent and knowlegable. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my dog.

I had trouble with my dog lunging and growling when I had him on leash. I didn't like to walk "Bruno" in public because he made such a racket when he saw other dogs. It was embarrassing.
After six weeks of private lessons with Dogs Ltd I am able to take "Bruno" with me when I go places and not be embarrassed.

Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. One of the biggest secrets to training dogs is the owner's attitude and confidence. Confidence comes from learning how to be physically in control of their dog. That makes such a huge difference in how a dog responds.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Dogs Ltd & Training is the only dog training facility in Central Oregon that has a certified aggression test. The Safer Dog Aggression Evaluation was developed by Dr. Emily Weiss for the Humane Societies of Kansas to determine if incoming dogs were a bite or aggression threat. ASPCA SAFER™ is a humane and safe method to determine if dogs are a bite or attack threat.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Working with leash reactive, aggressive dogs is fun because their owners are so surprised at how much progress their dogs make in just six weeks of training. They are able to take their dogs places in public that they never thought it would be possible to go. Their dogs are behaving and relaxed around other dogs. It is a thrill to see the behavior changes.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. My clients ask me if it is really possible to train their dog so it will behave around other dogs and not lunge and growl on leash.

I tell them,"Definitely Yes!" When their dog passes the Safer Dog Aggression Test, we know that the behavior was learned and can be changed.
I help them understand that the problem will go away when we gain control of the dog and change their dog's emotional response to seeing other dogs.
