Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: Well, good question! My 8 years of experience is a start. Most trainers/coaches don't last very long in the fitness industry (for many reasons) - due to a lack of passion. If the passion isn't there, the learning won't be there either. I am constantly learning and growing as a coach...because the health and fitness world is constantly changing. I have made it my life's work to help people become healthier - and my clients' results demonstrate that. Find a coach that is a life-long learner! Empowering people. Sounds a bit cliche, I know... When an individual regains their health, they regain power and independence. That individual is stronger and tougher and can handle more of the ups and downs in life. It's a pursuit of OVERALL health, not just looking better in the mirror (while that isn't a bad thing, either).

It was great working with Travis. He is a very detail oriented trainer who cares about helping you get the results you want and will push you to your limit to help you get there. He knows that you need a well rounded workout routine to reach your goals, and makes sure to switch it up not only to work each muscle group and continue from hitting a plateau in your weight loss goals, but so that you don't get bored! The only issue I had working with Travis, was that after months of working towards my goals, I began to lose some motivation, and stopped making as much success. I felt that Travis could have given me some baby step smaller goals to help me get back to where I needed to be to have success, but each session we would work out, and I would go home, feeling good about the workout, but knowing I wasn't fully committed anymore. Maybe Travis could, in the future, help set smaller goals with his clients if they begin to lose motivation, even if that means giving "homework" and consistently checking in each session. Overall, I am very happy I worked with Travis, and feel that my time with him has drastically changed not only my body and my weight loss, but my entire way of thinking about health, diet, and exercise. It's truly a lifestyle choice to work out and eat right and be a healthier you, and it's one I am happy to take part in, thanks to Travis Baker!

Thank you for the feedback, Lauren. While I've come a long way in my coaching over the years...I've still got a lot to learn. The best part about personal training is also what makes it so challenging - each person is different. The "one-size-fits-all" approach doesn't belong in fitness, that's for sure. Continuing my education is something I don't take lightly. It is a MUST for all trainers trying to make a real impact. I WILL get better with each day and learn from past mistakes. I appreciate the opportunity to work with you and Fenner. I wish you both the best!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Absolutely. While education isn't EVERYTHING when it comes to being an effective, productive trainer - staying current with the latest trends and continuing to grow in your knowledge of the human body, nutrition, workout programming...there is so much to learn! So, for those "trainers" that get one certification and call it good - I say BOGUS!!! That doesn't cut it and it will NOT help you as a trainee. When looking for a personal trainer/strength coach, find someone that is never satisfied with what they currently know; find someone that is a lifelong learner.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

There are a number of things to look for in a personal trainer/strength coach: education (does he/she actually know their stuff...and are they constantly learning?), experience (are you going to be his/her first client? Or 10th? Or 500th?), past/current client-results (Are his/her current clients reaching their goals?), specialization (What is the trainer's focus? Weight loss? Athletic performance? Body building?)... The list goes on. But in my professional opinion, nothing matters more than this: PERSONALITY. I know, I know...it sounds too simple. But if you can't get along with this person, or if you don't respect this person...or trust this person - IT WON'T WORK. Find a trainer you can trust and you genuinely enjoy spending time with (and has the qualities listed above). More than likely, you'll be seeing this person 2-3 hours every week!
