Henna has been studying and performing belly dance since 2002. Middle Eastern audiences enjoy her natural style and solid understanding of Arabic and Turkish rhythms and instrumentation.
In addition to traditional styles of belly dance (a.k.a. raks sharki or Dans Oriental), Henna enjoys pushing the boundaries of movement and music by fusing anything that inspires her to dance. Henna continues to study the roots of modern day belly dance and has a passion for Middle Eastern music. She believes in the evolution of belly dance as a modern dance form, as well as an ancient, celebratory ritual.
She teaches and performs as a soloist and as part of the tribal fusion trio, Nagamani, in the Portland metro area.
Question and answer
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Be sure to find out as much as you can about the performer you are wanting to book. In this day and age, everyone should have at least one video online somewhere. Follow your gut instinct - is this someone you'd want your grandmother to see? Professional dancers are poised, graceful, and put the audience first. Look for reviews online for the performer. There really is a lot of information out there to help you decide. When you're ready to book her, contact her by phone or email and provide as much information about your event as possible. A professional will go the extra mile to customize her performance for your audience.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. If I were a customer, I'd like to know if the performer I am interested in booking is culturally informed as well as technically skilled. Customers always ask me where bellydance originated (primarily Egypt, Turkey, and Greece) and how you learn to bellydance. I am always happy to talk about these aspects with customers before or after the show. A common misconception is that belly dance is for the entertainment of men, like stripping. This is not only untrue, but harmful to the art form. It's always my goal to present bellydance in the best possible light.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. What is your performance experience?
Are there any videos I can see showing you in a live performance setting?
How do you handle difficult audience members?
How much space do you need to perform?
What time will you arrive at my event?
Do you use any props?
Do you ever work with live music?
Why do you love bellydance?
How would you describe your costuming?
Anything that pertains to your event specifically!
