As a counselor, I am kind, resourceful, experienced, and challenging. My favorite phrases are “try it on for an experiment” and “willing suspension of disbelief”.
I believe in working in the "here and now", and only digging into your history to understand difficulties you are having. I can do short or long-term counseling. I had my original training in Gestalt and much has increased since then, as our knowledge of counseling, psychology and neuropsychology has grown. On your path, I can point out some fun and more efficient ways to get you to where you want to. I have been with many people on their journeys and have learned much from them.
I see individuals and couples, heterosexual, lesbian and gay people. I have a great deal of experience working with elderly and their families, chronically ill patients, anxiety, depression and addictions. I believe in successful aging and practice them. I have a sliding fee from $40 to $80 an hour. You decide on what you think is fair to pay.
As a consultant, I can go to private homes to do assessments (on the east side of Portland) of your loved ones’ needs with their permission, and provide recommendations. I also do consultations with agencies. All consultation is done at the $80 rate plus travel time.
Question and answer
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I have over 35 years experience working with a wide variety of people in private and public service agencies. I am non-judgmental while being knowledgeable enough to spot possible areas of concern. I continually update my knowledge with post graduate education well as other training. Most recently I went back to college to complete all the coursework in Mind/Body Health at Portland State University as well as receiving a Certificate in Gerontology there. I approach each person holistically: including mind, body and spirit.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I enjoy connecting with people in a helpful way. I enjoy the process of being present when clients are growing into themselves to enjoy the true richness of their abilities and life opportunities. When their lives improve to the point that coming to counseling is less interesting than the rest of their lives I feel a sense of satisfaction."
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. "What do you think I shuld do?" And I say, " lets talk about this and explore the options that you would feel good about. There is often no one answer but a variety of answers that will improve the situation. The step you take now need not be large but to lead in the direction you want to go."
"How will I know when counseling is done?" I say, "all along the way we will be talking about your goals for counseling and will chart how we are doing in meeting your goals. It is normal for the goals to change but there will be a time when meeting your goals will involve people and activities outside our relationship and you will graduate."
