We offer a wide variety of services to address your pet’s behavioral needs.

Obtain veterinary behavior consultations with our animal behaviorist and veterinarian (Valli Parthasarathy, PhD, DVM) to help you find solutions to challenging dog and cat behavior problems and help address any medical issues, which may be contributing to them.

We have day training packages for busy people who want to improve their dog’s behavior, but can’t find the time. Our certified professional dog trainer sets the stage by helping you set up management in your dog’s life, then builds behavioral foundations and shows you how to help your dog keep learning afterward.

We have dog training classes to help your furry family member learn, all the way from a puppy preschool for the young pups to family dog or canine good citizen classes for adolescents on up.

We also have specialty dog classes, such as reactive rover and therapy dog skills to address specific training goals and other single-topic classes to continue improving your dog’s skills and good behavior.

I first heard of Synergy Behavior after consulting a holistic veterinarian, Dr Nuccio, here in Portland. My Golden Retriever Isabelle, had been showing signs of reactivity at one year old and at the age of two it was worse. Dr Nuccio had personally used Synergy Behavior for problems involving her dog and a new baby.
The success was so astounding, I was immediately encouraged.

For the first two years of her life I had Isabelle to every conceivable location to work and train with her: PSU, the Pearl, W23rd , farms, Pioneer Square. But I was more and more afraid to pass other dogs. I found myself ready to jump curbside, because at too close a range, Isabelle would jump other dogs. I live right by Forest Park, but I couldnt take her up there, because if dogs came up to her off lead she would lunge and growl . What had been dished out to Isabelle, she was giving back. My world became smaller and smaller. And soon we were limited to our own street, then, our own yard. My lovely soft Golden at home was just too much to handle because she felt so threatened by other dogs.

Scott and Valli of Synergy Behavior worked right away on appropriate ways to channel her arousal into positive games. They went with me through my neighborhood to assess the challenges we were met with everyday. Right away I saw small improvements between Isabelle and I. Scott and Valli fine tuned my understanding of dog body language to be better poised to get in front of the problem rather than react to it. Indeed, along with my dog, I had gotten reactive as well. Neither of us were having any fun on walks anymore. There was a potential dog problem around every corner.

That was October of 2009. Since then we have done more than I could have imagined. We actually completed Synergy Behaviors Family dog class with real success, and had a lot of fun doing it.We didnt even need their reactive Rover class because of the private work we had done! We take walks in the park...though not on the busiest of trails. Isabelle is still about management...but she has way more fun than she used to rather than being so worried all the time. And I have way more fun and confidence knowing Im prepared to lead my dog through a more enjoyable life.

Scott and Valli of Synergy Behavior have a wonderful positive demeanor with dogs and people as well . They kindly eased my fears about doing something wrong with lots of positive encouragement and plenty of clear strategies for coping with explosive situations: how to keep a clear head and be effective and move on positively from any mistakes. Thats a pretty special component for novices who, through circumstances, have been forced to go deeper into training than they ever imagined!

I feel I recieved a mentorship rather than just training, rather than blaming myself for her being reactive we focused on how to deal positively at the place we were at. Its one of those lifetime opportunities thats life changing.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. It is easy to get the wrong advice or use techniques which could cause more behavioral harm to your dog or cat. Pick someone who uses modern, rewards-based training techniques and behavioral advice and who has a deep understanding of how to use them. Our staff includes a PhD Animal Behaviorist and Veterinarian, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and several trainers in development. We believe in ongoing learning for all of our staff and foster close collaboration between veterinarians, trainers and pet parents.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. You can achieve amazing behavioral results using positive (rewards-based) training and avoid many unwanted side-effects which can result from relying on punishment to train.

Good leadership shouldn't be about physically enforcing dominance over a pet. It should be about setting clear rules and providing gentle guidance to promote good behavior.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Can I speak to you about your training techniques or observe a class to make sure I feel comfortable with what you are going to recommend I do with my pet?
