Says one client: "Choosing to work with Lena was by far the best decision we made regarding the birth of our first child. Without her tirelessly calm and encouraging support throughout the birth, we don't know how we would have endured."
And a nurse midwife who has worked with Lena several times: "Last night when I was working with Lena the thought occurred to me that she is one of those special people who has a truly unique and special ability to be with women during labor and birth."

A. It's good to read up a little on doulas before you start your search. DONA and CAPPA have good information on their websites about the scope of a doula's practice. Ask friends who have used doula services what they liked about their doula and what kinds of services they provided. Spend some time thinking about the kind of support you might be needing during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. And if you're not sure, that's okay, too. The most important thing to consider when hiring a doula is whether you think they'll be a good fit for your family. Is this someone you can feel comfortable establishing a trusting relationship with?
A. There are few things more thrilling than witnessing a new life coming into the world. I love birth, in all its "messiness", complexity and emotions. Birth is a journey in and of itself, and bearing witness to that journey and being able to share in it with families is a privilege and honor.
I love getting to know families in the weeks and months prior to the birth itself, and witnessing the incredible transformation that takes place at the moment of birth: not only has their baby been born, but they, too, are reborn as parents.
I also love supporting families in the days and weeks after the birth as well. I believe that families in our culture do not get enough support in the early days, and I love the opportunity to connect with families just as they're establishing this wonderful new relationship.
