Introduction: I perform as well as teach. I'm a member of several music clubs, and am a church organist and choir accompanist. I love working with people. I like watching them grow more confident, both musically and personally. I attend master classes given by visiting pianists to Portland. Many times what I learn can light a spark in a student, and the music comes alive. That's a thrill for any teacher. I am a continuing piano student myself and have studied with the same Portland teacher for the past 16 years. There's always something new to learn. I'm a student of the Taubman technique. Gay Otey has been instructing me in piano weekly for over 4 years. As an adult beginner with just enough knowledge to get me in trouble, I have been improving with Gay's patient assistance. I began with basic arrangements with help to improve technique and confidence. With lots of coaching, I have improved to more difficult piano arrangements and have been able to perform for a small music group. There is never a dull moment with Gay, but at the same time she reinforces the discipline needed to develop piano skills. Even when I get frustrated Gay is able to encourage me. She has a great sense of humor so we have fun while working. Also for over a year I have had instruction in voice and I think that my voice and the range of my voice have improved greatly due to her exercises particularly her focus on breath. Gay has a very professional attitude, but adjusts the structure and exercises to the student and the student's goals. I find this very helpful. I am enjoying my piano and singing more and I am developing more knowledge of music. I can not think of anything more that Gay could do to make learning piano and vocal skills more effective.

Gay has taught 3 of our kids over the past 9 years and we have had nothing but a wonderful experience. She is very professional and has a way to make the kids work hard and laugh at the same time. Excellent teacher!!

Gay is wonderful. She works with our busy schedule, travels to us in a difficult-to-find location, and listens to my daughter (7 years old) to bring the perfect instruction for skill development while maintaining inspiration for playing the piano.

I charge $20 for a 30-minute lesson, $30 for 45 minutes, and $37.50 for an hour.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I often offer a complimentary 30-minute "Meet and Greet" to get acquainted with a prospective student, give a sample lesson, and look at possible music to begin with.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been a continuing piano student for the past 16 years, studying the Taubman/Golandsky piano technique. My teacher here in Portland is a member of their staff. If I have a question of how to teach a particular part of a piece, I can bring it to a lesson and receive instant help.
