A. When hiring a video producer or production company, my advice is to gauge whether the producer is helping you craft a program to meet your specific goals - meaning your audience and the purpose of your program. At Mercury Productions, we focus on what your communication goal is, who your audience is, and what your budget is. We also look at ways we can leverage what we shoot for other projects you may have not considered, making the project more cost-effective.
A. The secrets of this industry, are really that there are so many variables in video production, and it's really hard to compare apples to apples when you are looking at a variety of vendors. At Mercury Productions, take a flexible approach to each project, and customize our services to help reach our clients' goals for communicating to their target audience.
A. I would suggest asking how long they have been in business, ask to see some samples of their work, ask if they are insured, and ask about references from other customers. At Mercury Productions, we feel it is important to be honest and up-front with our customers, as we strive to build long term relationships. Having been in the video production field for over 25 years, we have a well seasoned production background, and can offer many approaches to our clients. And by the way, we are fully insured.
A. The baseline questions I am interested in, and which really drive the decision making process for your production, are "What is the goal/purpose of your program?" and "Who is your intended/target audience?". With these questions answered, along with a budget figure, decisions can easily be made as to how best utilize resources to craft a program which delivers your message to your intended audience. At Mercury Productions, we pride ourselves in having a flexible approach to all of our clients' projects. At the same time, we always help educate our clients regarding the video production process as it can be overwhelming.
A. The most common question I receive, other than how soon can we have this, is how much does it cost? How much does it cost is really a very difficult question to answer without knowing the broad scope of the project, and knowing the purpose and target audience of a project.
I use the analogy of building a house to illustrate the craft of video production. When building a house, there are many different variables - like how big a house is going to be, how many rooms/bathrooms, what sort of windows and doors will be installed, down to what sort of paint will be applied. These variables all have corresponding costs, and the sum of a variety of decisions can greatly effect the cost of the project. The same is true for video production. The scale is generally much smaller - but the variables really make it hard to produce an accurate estimate without a good understanding of the project.
Here at Mercury Productions, we take the time to understand what your communication and project goals are. If you have a budget range in mind, we can work backwards from that and show you the options we suggest. We are also happy to create a budget scenario for you to show you a range of services with associated costs.
It is very hard to compare "ballpark" budgets, because you don't know if you are getting the master craftsman's vision or the apprentice's guess.
