Introduction: I simply care a great deal about what I do and make. It is an extension of myself. My work stands out from the crowd because each and every piece I make is unique. My style combines the clean lines of modern with the rich surfaces of rustic, antique and reclaimed pieces. I pay attention to the littlest details so every element of the design is considered perfectly. I consider where the object will go, how it will be used, and for how long. These considerations and my ability to professionally harmonize various materials whether new or reclaimed give my work the edge over the competition. We do not mass produce fad furniture. We make timeless classics you'll love for a lifetime. I like working with people to help them make their home or office function the way they need it to and feel complete, comfortable and inspired. I feel a great sense of pride making something that is just perfect for a particular setting or end use. As an artist, I get really excited designing and working with the nuances of reclaimed materials and surfaces - I feel like a child in the sandbox again.

I've worked in tandem with Greg on several design projects over the past five years and can speak with confidence that our time together has always been well spent and has always resulted in beautiful finished work, all well within budget, and each piece very much to our mutual clients' satisfaction. Two memorable jobs: Custom-crafted soft, upholstered pelmets for installation above living room, dining room, and kitchen windows - Greg and I worked with a local upholsterer to create modern and chic window coverings which added a special crowning touch to a few rooms in a North Portland home. The experience could have been harrowing, given how many hands were in the pie, but instead it was a real delight...with all parties working together to define style, dimension, craftsmanship and quality. Greg stayed right on top of second and third measurements, ensuring that everyone stayed on the same page. This was essential for a fine custom fit. These pelmets have stood the test of time, in terms of style and physical wear. Very happy with end product! Custom-built Dining Table - Greg and I worked together with our client to define a style that she loved and would want around for a long time. She'd seen a particular style of table that she just couldn't quite afford...and she'd never seen the table in exactly the kind of color scheme she wanted (sort of earthy jewel tones). We worked together to define style and also color combination, created the perfect size and height of table for her smallish eating space, and then Greg went to town working and re-working the legs and other joining parts until it met our clients' expectations to the nth degree. When we saw the finished piece we couldn't help but feel a huge sense of pride...it was really beautiful, fit the bill as per style and color scheme, and we all knew it came out an heirloom piece!

We had a metal awning made to protect the deck. It was completed in less than two weeks and the work was very precise and accurate to his specifications. It was powder coated the color of my house and it fits in with the design and you can't even tell its metal and it looks like wood. Its the best thing I have ever seen. It is as custom as an airplane. He knew exactly what to do where as other professionals did not to protect the deck. He knew the right guage of the material and the weight and the design to create a perfect project. His price was fair and I couldn't get a job done with so much knowledge out of anyone else; Greg is always on top of things. We always hire Greg for the craftsmanship and knowledge he has for his work. We would hire him again. Adrienne

I came to Greg needing some unique tables for a trade show. Keeping with our company Mantra, the tables needed to be built from scrap or reclaimed wood. Not only did Greg find enough scrap for 3 good sized tables, he combined and constructed them in a unique and beautiful way. Our employees loved the tables and we received many compliments on them during our show. Not only is Greg a wonderful and skilled craftsman, he listened well when we were telling him what we needed, he got the concept from the first moment and came up with a beautiful design for us. On top of it all, Greg went out of his way to complete the tables on a very tight deadline without sacrificing quality. I would use Greg again without hesitation and would recommend him to anyone in a heartbeat.

Greg Simons has provided excellent quality service and product on a number of projects. As an architect working in Portland, I have involved Greg on projects with very specific requirements. On a custom built staircase, Greg utilized parts made on a CNC mill to my exact specification, and installed in a short 3 day period. The quality was exact and the schedule and install time both came in below budget. For a high end restaurant nearing completion, Greg was able to offer assistance to complete a long list of items that had been missed in the General Contractors bid. His willingness to work with the client at a crucial time and to complete items necessary for opening was immensely helpful. I have also had Greg fabricate two separate custom millwork projects. I enthusiastically recommend Gregs product quality and service on high-end woodworking projects.

Greg built a nice narrow shelf over my kitchen sink so I could get more lighting there. His design was nicer than I had pictured and it works beautifully. He also made an old kitchen exhaust fan work so that I can use it - very important to me. It would not shut off as there was a problem with the opening mechanism. He removed the outside vent and its mechanism and substituted a vent cover and new wiring that allows the fan to shut off. And kept costs down.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I generally charge an initial design and consult fee of one day or $300. I generally spend much more than 8 hours developing the project for my client but this serves as an equitable retainer and proves the client is serious about hiring me for my services. Once a budget is established, I work to provide a design that will meet the clients needs and budget. After receiving a 50% deposit a schedule for completion is given and fabrication begins.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a member of The Guild of Oregon Woodworkers where we have regular meetings with demonstrations to share with one another and foster growth in the woodworking community. I also teach woodworking and metalworking skills. I enjoy the exchange and it keeps my skills sharp always reviewing the basics.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I love making things. I do not want to reinvent the wheel, but when I cannot find products that are to my liking I am driven to make them for myself.
