Feel out a few writers before settling on one, and trust your gut. I feel that the decision to work with a writer should come down to how well you feel he/she listens. Story arrives from good, solid listening. After all, your writer should be writing YOUR story, and if they don't seem like good listeners during that first phone call or meeting, then chances are they're not going to deliver the words you want.
