Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Keep in mind that your photos are going to be one of the few things that you will have to show from your wedding day. This is a lifetime investment and should not be skimped on. Your customized wedding album will be something that you will treasure for years, something to show your children and grandchildren. You will want something that you will be proud to show, not a book with faded pictures that are ripped or torn.

While price should be a concern, don't let cheaper prices be the deciding factor. Remember, you get what you pay for. Once your wedding is over, you can't redo the photography, so decide wisely.

Be sure to talk to several photographers. See if you and they are a good fit. Do you like their work? What kind of experience do they have? What do others say about their work?

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. While memberships in prestigious organizations are a plus but does not necessarily mean this makes the photographer any better than one who is not a member. Anyone with with a few hundred dollars can join. They do not have to pass any special requirements. Most people don't know this.

Be aware of a web site that shows so many "different looks or styles". Sometimes a person may use images from other sites that are not their own". If you visit the studio, ask to see sample albums. Is the album a sample of a single wedding from beginning to finish? Is the style consistent?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Know their background. How long have they been in business. Are they just doing this on the side for a little extra money or are they serious about their commitment to their business? Do you like their work and are you comfortable with the photographer? These are questions you should ask yourself after you have visited a studio.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Do you like their style? How do you click with the photographer? Are they willing to go the extra mile for you, in other words if you have a special request can they cover it? Do they nickle/dime you to death with extra charges? Such as charging you more for them to "dress up" for the wedding? While requesting extra coverage or traveling a great distance is a normal additional cost, the photographer should not charge you extra for dress, early arrival or an assistant. Some studios do charge for a second shooter but that is usually for bigger packages and should be built into the cost.
