Introduction: Spring Maintenance for your Slate Roof - Lancaster Pa #1 After a hard winter with lots of snow and ice, it would be wise for an owner of a slate roof to remember that a 'slate in time saves nine'. In other words, walk around your roof and visually check for any slate that may have broken or been damaged then get these slates repaired or replaced as soon as possible. #2 If you have trees directly over or nearby your slate roof any branches, or even limbs that may have come down from the ice and snow, it should be promptly removed. Fallen limbs or even small branches can damage a slate roof. The location of where the branch hit the roof should be noted and an inspection of that area should be completed to ensure there are no hidden leaks. #3 Icicles can look beautiful cascading down from the eaves of your home but they can wreak havoc on both your gutters and slate. If you have noticed icicles hanging from the edges of your slate roof, chances are, the gutter should be adjusted to ensure proper drainage.
