Chris Goodman was referred to me by a good friend - I had some kitchen cabinet work I needed done, a ceiling repair and a set of bulkhead doors installed in my older home in 2010. Chris and his crew were great - he quoted me a fair estimate quickly and knocked out the work faster than I expected with a minimum of inconvenience to my family. The carpentry work was particularly good. Highly recommended!

Chris completely renovated my kitchen last fall. I can't say enough about how happy I am with the work that he did. He is knowledgeable, professional and wonderful to work with. He finished the job on budget and on time! I would not hesitate to recommend him and I am about to contact him for some more projects!

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. The jobs i typically take are multi aspect home renovations. I try to keep to the higher end jobs including difficult/elaborate trim, kitchens, and tile work.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The most important thing for people to know about the industry is you really do get what you pay for. The cheapest contractor is exactly that. I am not the cheapest you will find, I am reasonably priced, but I produce quality work. Never take the cheapest estimate and you usually don't want to take the highest. Talk to your contractor and have them explain everything in detail, communication is everything.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Every job I do I make every effort to make the homeowner as comfortable as possible. I'll treat your home like its my own and strive to keep as clean of a job as I can. I take the time to explain exactly whats being done so there is no confusion. Lastly but most importantly is my pre-construction meeting that I have with my customers. I go over every little detail that people may not think about so there are no surprises during the construction phase.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love being able to transform someones home into something that they are truly proud to own. Making it more enjoyable for them to live in their home, but most of all taking something dated and transforming it into something beautiful.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. Being in construction is what I have been born to do. Ever since I was a kid measuring things around the house with a tape measure and fixing things with pretend tools. At age 13 I started carrying tools for a general construction company and worked summers for him learning basics about all aspects of home remodeling (plumbing, electric, drywall, windows, doors, tile, framing, etc.) After 2 summers with him I went to work for a custom carpenter and really worked on my finish skills. I did a lot of cabinet work and learned to specialize in kitchens and intricate trim work. I loved what I was doing and I stayed with him off and on during school for about 5 years. In September of 2006 I started at The Williamson Free School Of Mechanical Trades. After 3 years in their carpentry program I graduated with a degree in Construction Technology with an emphasis in carpentry. After graduating I started working with a remodeling company and decided it wasn't the right fit for me. After a short time I decided to venture out on my own and started C. Goodman Carpentry and I specialize in kitchens finish work, but I am skilled in all aspects of home renovation.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I recently did a complete kitchen renovation for Ms. Colleen Ryan. I really enjoyed working so closely with Ms. Ryan about the layout of the kitchen. We opened up the kitchen into the dining room giving her another section of counter top and more prep area. This job came out beautifully and I am extremely proud of it. Pictures can been seen on my company page on facebook. Search for C. Goodman Carpentry and in photos, it's labeled "Colleen Ryan Kitchen".

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Continuing education is extremely important in my industry with all the new tools and products that are constantly coming out. New studies are always being done and new codes and laws are always going into effect. I recently got my certification to be able to work with surfaces contaminated with lead paint. I try to get to at least 2 or 3 trade shows per year just to stay on top of new information. I consider my knowledge of the industry one of the most significant aspects of my company.
