Private tutoring to enhance your present guitar skills or for the beginner interested in beginning the musical journey. Instruction and coaching are also offered to teach students the craft of songwriting. Why not write a new song or revisit an old one with a new approach?
I am a full-time professional who has performed and written songs for over 30 years and worked with many local artists. I teach folk, blues and ragtime (Piedmont) finger picking (Dylan, Jim Croce, Doc Watson, Blind Blake), as well as the electric styles of Muddy Waters, The Allman Brothers, SRV and the Stripes. I offer help with playing authentic Mississippi Delta (Son House, Robert Johnson) bottleneck slide and have been a student and player of this form for over 30 years. The lessons are fun and tailored to your needs, but goal oriented and structured. I believe playing "by ear" is very important, and I teach ear training to all my students, as well as basic reading skills. This includes the ability to recognize chords and chord patterns as the student listens so they can pick up their instrument and play what they've heard. Another important benefit of this ear training is the ability to transpose songs into another key on the spot. These abilities are within reach of all students.
For the more advanced player, lessons attempt to de-mystify previously hard to understand concepts, like using modes in a practical manner by reinforcing solid fundamentals through scale and agility exercises, exploring improvisational ideas and providing the coaching needed to make instantaneous harmonic decisions while soloing. Free shareware programs found on the Internet are used to minimize costs for books, tuners, metronomes, etc.

Ron helped me become a decent slide guitar player and Piedmont picker. I played seriously for the last 15 years, been a member of countless bands, and was in at a musical crossroads. After working with Ron for 1 1/2 years, I was able to uncover the possibilities of the fretboard and improvisation and learned a new set of slide guitar skills. I look at music much differently now, than before we began to work together. Big ups.
