Private Self-Defense Instruction

Building Confidence and Discipline through Martial Arts

There seems to be a lot of showmanship, bravado, and overstatement in modern sport martial arts: trophies, ribbons, colored belts, etc. Traditional Japanese martial arts take a completely different approach: training aims at suppression of ego, quiet confidence, and honesty about one's strengths and weaknesses. I know the power of the techniques from personal experience, and I want my students to understand their efficacy through personal experience too. Students who give themselves to the process will not be disappointed.

Mark Toth studied Japanese-style classical martial arts in Milwaukee for about ten years. He was promoted as school director dojo-cho by the Genbukan organization headmaster in Japan, and as such, he has the permission to open a Genbukan branch school anywhere in the world.

The first incarnation of my school was a university club sport system (Kobudo Club); it proved to be successful and spread to several universities in the Midwest. After moving to Philadelphia in 2008, I decided to change my business model to that of a stand-alone school for self-defense instruction (Kobudo School of Self-Defense). Watching young women (and men) grow in awareness and confidence during campus safety seminar is very gratifying for me.

For traditional martial arts training, get it straight from a Genbukan dojo-cho!
