Are you ready for some quick updates to your living space? Have you just bought a home and need assistance with fixing it up? Are you seeking to place your house on the market and desire to increase its resale value? Are you now looking for a new contractor because of a bad experience you had with the last guy? If so, then get in touch with me, Charles Kirby, C.K. Remodeling & Design's owner.

I'm a skilled craftsman in the Pittsburgh area who specializes in all types of carpentry, home improvements and repairs, remodeling, and handyman services. Unlike many other contractors, I truly understand and highly value the art of craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and sustainability. Buyer, beware when hiring someone for a home renovation or repair. Unfortunately, the world is full of shady contractors who take shortcuts, use sloppy building practices, employ a band-aid approach to repair work, or demand prepayment and never finish the job, often leaving the homeowner in a hazardous situation and out of tons of money.

My mission is to sustain profitable growth by providing value-added remodeling and repair services to customers at fair and market-competitive prices. I will achieve this mission through my actions, which will evidence trust, expert knowledge and skill of trade, uncompromising integrity, credibility, and lasting relationships with consumers, sub-contractors, and suppliers.

Success will be measured by new and existing customers choosing me over the competitor because of their belief in my ability to meet or exceed their expectations of craftsmanship, expertise, price, and service. Integrity has no room for error, so you can count on me to conduct business honestly.

I promise to only use high-quality materials obtained at the lowest prices, and deliver a finished product that reflects workmanship backed by pride. My top priority is to ensure safety and longevity of products constructed while maintaining a high level of awareness and sensitivity to the customer's budget. Likewise, I strive for my craftsmanship and design to be that which will add value to your home and to the broader community of which you reside.

"As a realtor, I have recommended C.K. Remodeling & Design to both my sellers and my buyers. I have used C.K. Remodeling & Design numerous times in my own home. I always recommend vendors to my clients that I have personally received exceptional service from. Charles is punctual for his appointments, provides high-quality work in a number of trades, uses top-quality materials on his jobs, and spends the time to explain what each project involves. The price he quotes on the proposal is the price you pay when the job is finished. Most importantly, his craftsmanship is a work of art. He takes pride in his work to deliver results which reflect the customer's style. For these reasons provided, I am proud to recommend his services to you." ~ Patricia Devello, Realtor

Having 25 years of experience doing most types of remodeling and home improvements, my goal is to create for you a custom look that reflects your personal style. Your home deserves to be handled by someone with specialized skills and whom you can trust, so let me tend to your next project and get it done right the first time without the waste of materials, money, or time. As always, I proudly stand by my motto: "Measure twice and cut once."

No project is too small! I am providing you with high-quality service at an affordable price in and around the Pittsburgh area. I gladly offer free project consultations, job estimates, and tips on how you can make the most informed decisions about your home to ensure safety and obtain a higher return on your investment.

I accepted a job offer out of state and we had to get our house sold quickly. Our realtor recommended Charles to us for all of the repairs and upgrades that needed to be done before we could list the house. Aside from having him address a few maintenance issues, we also asked him to upgrade both our kitchen and bathroom. We were stunned by how nice they each turned out. We're very happy with the work done and have received several offers for the house. We look to close next month.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Large projects are routinely basement, bathroom, and kitchen remodeling. Smaller projects tend to be minor repairs, installation of handicap accessories, and the replacement of interior doors. I’ve fulfilled many requests over the years, so my list of services continues to grow.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Unless an item is a custom piece that is specially-ordered from the manufacturer, most materials are acquired at the local home improvement store. Spoiler Alert! When you receive a quote from the contractor, it’s important that you find out what portion of the price is related to materials. Once you have the magic number, go to your local grocery store that has a gasoline rewards program and purchase gift cards for the home improvement store the materials are to be purchased at in the amount needed to cover the cost of the materials. Then, provide your contractor with the gift cards and they can pick up the materials for you. This benefits both parties involved, as the contractor doesn’t have to put out any upfront costs for materials, and you get to benefit from the gasoline rewards program. On a side note, make sure that you can trust the contractor hired to not walk away with your gift cards. If you have concerns, pick up the materials yourself or have them delivered in time for the contractor to start work on the date scheduled.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. I feel it’s the contractor’s responsibility to gather the information needed to provide an estimate for the project. Thus, it’s not important for a customer to divulge every detail of the project when initial contact is made. When you call to inquire about my services, all I need to know is what type of project you’re looking to have done. The next step will be to make an appointment with you to further review the job specifications and requirements. Upon arriving at your scheduled (and FREE!) consultation, I’ll take the necessary measurements of the space and determine what type of materials should be used. After our meeting, I’ll do my homework and get you an estimate as soon as possible.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I treat every project as if I were doing it for myself and each home as if it were my own. For example, there are two things I consistently maintain awareness of for each project: 1) the safety of those who reside in the home after the job is finished, and 2) the amount of value the project will add to the home. I find it very important to make sure that any electrical, plumbing, or structural work is properly finished. On many occasions I have discovered haphazard work done by other folks; thus, leaving the occupants in a dangerous living environment. Also, I will dissuade customers from pursuing projects that will not add value to the home. It’s perfectly acceptable to take care of cosmetic repairs, but some homeowners will make over-improvements that they will never see a financial return on when it comes time to sell the house. Overall, I’m just looking out for the consumer’s best interest.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. If I’m not working on a project or drawing up an estimate, then I’ve got my nose buried in some form of literature related to my trade. I’m a subscriber to many periodicals of the industry. I do extensive online research to keep up with all the building codes. Realtors let me know of any market changes in the value of properties for my service area. Having a close relationship with the employees at various home improvement stores really helps keep me informed about the latest products on the market. I also stay connected with other contractors and observe their methods to see if they’ve discovered a more efficient way to complete a certain task. Lastly, I find HGTV to be a great inspiration for new ideas.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. The pricing of a project fluctuates with each customer. Previous experience has proven that it’s difficult to commit to just one standard price for any type of job; primarily because each home is different. New or old, every house has its oddities and challenges (sometimes hidden). I can easily provide you with a ballpark figure; however, I’ll add a disclaimer to the figure that the amount could fluctuate with any unexpected challenges met during the course of the project. More likely than not, I’ll be right on target with the original price quoted. On a side note, I do offer a variety of discounts. Be sure to ask about what discounts I offer when you call to inquire about my services.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Work alongside multiple contractors to develop a breath of the industry. Depth will occur over the years when you discover what aspects of the trade really interest you and those you’ve developed a skill for. It’s important that you remain ethical in this business, as many new customers originate from referrals. Also, learn to take pride in your work, and don’t take shortcuts just to get the job done cheaply or quickly.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Is it better to call you or send an email?

Between the hours of 8am-6pm, I'm usually working on a project for a customer. I'll take your call if I'm at a point where I can stop what I'm doing, or if my hands are clean, lol. However, if your call goes to voicemail, please leave your name and a phone number so that I may call you back. I'll try to promptly return your call, but sometimes it may not be until I get finished with the day's work. If you choose to email me instead, please provide your name, phone number, general location, and a detailed description of the project to be done. The next step in the process will be for me to schedule a face to face meeting with you to further review the job specifications and requirements. Afterwards, I'll be able to provide you with an estimate of the cost and timeframe involved to complete the job. Again, all consultations and estimates are provided free of charge, and there is no obligation or commitment on your part.
