Introduction: Some teachers were born great singers. They literally just got out of bed one day and decided to sing. I listen to them perform and they are brilliant! I mean they are just incredible singers!!! But the fact of the matter is, they have no idea how they got there. And when things start feeling funny, then they have no idea how to fix it. I was born LOVING to sing and by "loving," I mean my parents couldn't shut me up!!! I was singing constantly!! Sure I could carry a tune and I was a bright, motivated child who wasn't afraid to perform in front of people, but everything I teach, I have learned. Let me say that again....EVERYTHING I teach, I have learned, I have struggled with, I have figured out and I have mastered. I know that if I can do it, then so can you. In fact it's BECAUSE I've learned all of this, that I can help you learn it too. I want to to help you, because there is no greater feeling to a singer than the relief of relaxed and healthy singing. And watching you get it is like Christmas to me.

I LOVE Hilerie, both as a friend and a coach. I was reluctant to start taking lessons in my mid-50s because I was convinced that nothing could be done to improve my aging voice, especially since I had never before considered proper singing techniques. Boy, was I wrong! Since I started working with Hilerie, my band-mates have commented on my progress. My toughest critic - my wife - has noticed, too. I’m more comfortable performing on stage and my stamina has improved tremendously. Hilerie is patient, encouraging, and most of all, she knows her business. Her bright personality, sharp wit and delightful sense of humor all help to make lessons an enjoyable experience. I would very highly recommend her to anyone - at any age - who is interested in improving his or her confidence and singing voice.

Hilerie is such an awesome voice instructor, but more than that, she is a great person and friend. She becomes her students' friend and mentor, helping and encouraging them along the way. Of all the instructors I have had in the past, Hilerie is my favorite. She was able to teach me things that none of my other instructors ever did. She really cares about each of her students. When my daughter was experiencing some major health problems, Hilerie was a great friend and encouragement to me. She took time to find information about doctors and diet that she felt would help, and she kept in touch even when we stopped lessons for awhile. She was genuinely interested in our lives. Even though she has moved her studio to Pittsburgh now, she still keeps in touch with us and offers to give us lessons whenever she comes in town. I love Hilerie and truly miss her!

As an adult male with a weekly show as a vocalist and performer of children's music, I wanted a vocal coach who understood the theatrical elements of performance and would take my children's music seriously. Hilerie could do both and with such insight, that along with improving my vocal technique, she was also improving my shows with suggestions that ranged from nutrition, to audience perception, to developing and keeping a winning attitude.

Hilerie is an excellent voice and performing arts teacher. My daughters had lessons with for over 4 years each. She works with the whole person, school environment and family. She develops high quality relationships that further the goals of all of her students: young children to folks in retirement. She emphasizes vocal health, general well-being, and high standards, whether a student wishes to perform publicly or sing at home. She is missed very much here in the Greater Binghamton area. Aspiring professionals, seasoned vocalists, and amateurs of every sort should seek her out quickly, before all of her openings are booked!

My daughter started with Hilerie when she was just 5 years old. Over the four years that she took lessons she learned a wide variety of music along with many vocal warm ups and exercises to enhance her singing. She really looked forward to working with Hilerie every week, and has been singing on a regular basis at our church ever since. In her own words, "Miss Hilerie Rocks."

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

I have had tons of students who have gone on to major in music in college. When they arrive, they are expected to choose a new teacher. It's always a hard transition for them, but there are a few things that I tell them to look for, First and foremost, make sure that that nothing ever hurts. Teachers will ask you to try some pretty crazy things to help you free up your instrument, but it should never hurt. Second, there's a rule I've always followed about reading a book- never give up on it until you've read the first 100 pages. Studying voice is the same way. You have to give a new teacher a chance. You have to give yourself a chance. The teach/student relationship requires a common vocabulary. When I talk about relaxing your tongue, you have to understand what that means in order to fix it. My job as a teacher is to explain it and demonstrate it so well, that you are able to make the necessary adjustments. Down the road, when I say.. "oops! Your tongue is getting tight again," then you will know exactly what I mean, because we worked hard on it together. That common vocabulary only comes from time and having the courage to try something new. What do you have to loose? It may just work!

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

You can take voice lessons and learn how to sing better, no matter your age and no matter your ability. I started very young, but not all do. Last year, my youngest student was my son Nicholas (5 years old) and my oldest student was in her 70s. A lot of teachers won’t take a student as young as five or six, but I am SO grateful that my parents started me when they did. My father, who started music much later than I and has his Masters Degree in Music Composition from UCLA, always said the biggest difference between him and I was that music was always my first language and for him it was always his second. I was blessed with fantastic teachers who never pushed me to sound older than I was or louder than I could sing and it really gave me a leg up on my peers especially in middle school and high school. Remember though, some famous singers didn’t start until their 20s and 30s, assuming you want to become a famous singer. Maybe you just want to be able to sing in your car with your windows rolled down, instead of up. Wouldn’t that be nice?!?!?
