About
i have a fun way about teaching. I feel that a student will only get as excited about a topic as the instructor is, so I try to make it as engaging as possible. Also, I try to connect the concepts to the individual student's life as much as possible. I will use a sports analogy for an anthlete, try to liken math to English or Art concepts if that is the students strength. Teaching is more of an art and I try to make the experience as diverse as the people i teach. Furthermore, I make it a point to continuously go back and connect to previous concepts and/or chapters, This improves learning and reinforces that many concepts build on previous ones. Math is very much like that; every concept builds on the concepts that came before. Above all, "math confidence" is crucial. I work with students to build a solid foundation in arithmetic and basic Algebra as to ensure that success is reached quickly with a minimum amount of frustration. This improves self-confidence and makes math more fun. I like to compare it to reading. If you can't spell how can you read, similarly, if you can't do arithmatic, how can you do math. I love watching students learn and grow. There are few jobs out there where you get to get involved in another person's life in such a positive way. Education is a major key to a successful career and adult life and I find it an honor and very fufilling to assist children and teenagers with that. My primary goal is to teach students to teach themselves, to become problem solvers and positive thinkers. in other words, To Turn Students Into Life-Long Learners

My son is a student at Cranston H.S. West who never struggled with a class until Algebra 2. A Mechanical Engineering degree gave me the knowledge to help my son with math, but unfortunately not the patience. After some research I contacted Jonathon and set up an appointment for an initial one-hour session. I figured I had nothing to lose. During the first session I sat in Jonathon’s living room and casually audited the class. I became more impressed as time progressed. He casually became acquainted with my son and in no time they were comfortable with each other. Jonathon stressed the importance of being organized and having good note-taking skills. He spent a few minutes covering tips to help my son accomplish this. After a couple of one hour sessions my son had a math test (in school) and scored the highest grade in the class. He also told me that he is raising his hand frequently to answer questions. Obviously his confidence was increasing and was feeling good about himself. Jonathon was not just showing my son how to solve problems like teachers do in school, he was teaching him how to understand problems and learn math. My son actually looks forward to his sessions with Jonathon. As an Engineer, a parent, and a former college teacher, I highly recommend Jonathon as a math tutor for anyone requiring help.

John has worked wonders with my so jared. Math has always been his weakest subject. I was utterly frustrated by the fact that I couldn't help him, as all parents would agree about. Since my son has been working with john, he has made huge improvements. John is clear, direct and passionate about teaching. He really cares. Anyone looking to help their child should give john the opportunity, the results will speak for themselves.

My son John started having trouble in math during seventh grade. Jon worked with my son during his last two years of middle school and he was wonderful. He could take the most difficult concepts and make them understandable. He is extremely patient and has an easygoing manner which made my son feel very comfortable with him. Without Jon, my son would have failed math. Instead, he ended up with an A average...and is tackling algebra in high school confidently. Thanks Jon!

My 14-year old daughter worked with Jon on Algebra 1 for the past year. He is an effective communicator and his instruction is thorough. He offers an in depth approach to her current studies through the use of her school texts and lessons as well as suggests online resources for further practice. Jon is reliable scheduling tutor dates and willing to accommodate alternative times when necessary. We intend to continue using his services throughout her high school career as we have seen the breadth of understanding mathematical principles attained through Jon’s valuable instruction.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I mostly work with high school students but also work with a few middle school students. In the past I tutored college students at RI College Math Learning Center. I think once a student reaches 5th or 6th grade if they are showing signs of struggling it is important to get them help right away. It is always easier to help a student at the moment of confusion than to try to find those missing pieces in their education years later. It is also a lot better for the student who is able to maintain their confidence in their abilities with earlier intervention.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for someone that is going to be a long term advisor to you and your child. Education is a long process that builds each year. For most students they change instructors at least once a year. Think of the benefits of having a person that is deeply involved in their education throughout their education career who they can trust and who understands how they learn and how to teach them. Personally, I think that the benefits of a tutor is completely under-rated in today's world.
