About Charleston Center for Photography

We restore a copy of your old photographs, so they look nearly the way they did when they were first printed. If the client doesn't have an existing digital file of the picture that needs restoring, we will take the old photo and scan to create a digital file. Once we have a digital file, we estimate the time and cost of removing scratches, imperfections and spots.

Our professional staff of retouchers will also fix color fading and aging blemishes. We also offer signature toning and post production for any images a client has, as well as museum quality and archival printing, too.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Don't simply pick a business based on their prices because you often get what you pay for, especially when it comes to hiring a photo restoration artist or professional printer. Also, having confidence in them will put you at ease. Be sure to interview them before making a decision and ask all the pertinent questions.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. As a digital restoration artist, I work primarily with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, onOne Suite 6 and other professional imaging tools. Be sure during your initial conversation with your potential restoration artist that you ask what their process is. If they aren't using one of the software listed above, I doubt the outcome will be what you want. Also, some restorations may take longer than others, so have patience. The project may also require a digital capture with a camera or flatbed scanner. As the restorer what they use and do your homework on that process. I use a top-of-the-line camera with lights and polarizing filters for large objects and a high-end flatbed scanner for the smaller items, so that should be pretty standard.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Make sure that you are up front about what your expectations are. Many digital artists with use creative license when doing post production or creating a "signature look" for their clients, therefore it's imperative that your voice rings through too. If you are getting an image restored, make sure you ask about their process and work flow. This will tell you whether they are really legit or just out to take your money. Also, ask for examples of their work too.
