About
I am a professional photographer...not a picture taker. I know the process. I started out with black and white film, exposure and development and graduated to color. Several years ago I made the transition to digital. I have taught photography at the College of Charleston and many classes at high schools and technical schools. I know what makes a perfect photograph and how to capture it. If it doesn't work out perfect I know how to fix it. A professional photographer knows how to use light correctly for exact shadowing and can make a photograph under any lighting circumstance without a camera doing it all for them. Automatic cameras are nice but they allow little creativity. I like to compose and create in the camera and then I require very little retouch work. capturing those precious moments in time that would be lost without a picture.

I've known John Wells for over 50 years and I find him to be extremely professional. John took pictures of our high school reunion and I enjoy looking at them from time to time as we get older. In addition to a group photo he offered individuals and couples private sessions. John Wells will come to you and work on your schedule. If I ever need a photographer again you be can sure I will call John Wells Photography.

John did an event for me and provided outstanding photography. The coffee table book is really nice. He also did some insurance photography last year for me. I will definitely use John again for all of my photography needs.

John and his crew did my fathers 80th birthday party. He created a beautiful coffee table book with the photographs. Our memories will be reflected every time we look at the book. Thank you

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I actually was asked by a fellow student senior year if I would photograph her small wedding. It was 1975 and I shot one roll of film on an old Rollei camera and got 12 pictures. I had each one enlarged to 8x10 and placed in an album for her. I charged $50.00 for the costs. A year later her friend had seen those photos and asked me to do her wedding. I shot around 35 photos this time and she bought around $150.00 worth of photos. I was in college studying chemistry and journalism. Not planning to be a photographer but just enjoying it as a hobby and making a little extra money. Within the next year I photographed weddings for sisters of both those brides. When I delivered the photos the father of one of them said John you should think about doing this for a living. I did, I have, and no regrets.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Check out previous work. You should see some that you do not like as well as some that look like they are out of a magazine. If every thiing you see is perfect you are not seeing the photographers actual work. A good retoucher can correct anything but often retouching is an additional expense. A great photographer does not need very much retouch work except in extreeme circumstances. A great photographer knows when to retouch and how much is needed.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

anyone can take a picture but only a professional photographer can artistically capture the moment under any condition at any given moment
