- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
INterior design is a process! Design is also relationship.It is custom work just for you, and is very different from a retail relationship because of the custom order time and design plan creation. When you hire a designer understand you are hiring their talent and their trade proprietary products and most designers have their own fabricators that they will prefer to use and are usually only wholesale to the trade and are not retail fabricators. Designers earn their living by their hourly fee and the products that they supply. All drawings are the property of the designer for the process of the project. If clients should request copies of the"Design Plan" they may be purchased.Design Plans are intellectual property. Have a contract spelling out the scope of the project and hourly fees. See their portfolio Know that your designer wants this to be everything that you want it to be, so communication is so important. Trust and confidence in your Designer goes a long way in making for a smooth process. Have the financial terms in writing; such as: tax, shipping, freight and delivery charges are usually on the final billing because the designer will not know this information.Quotes are usually given on materials and labor. Custom work and custom ordered products are not returnable or refundable. Custom design materials are the way to having a designed home but the process is not for everyone. Designer materials and product information is proprietary and is part of the Designers compensation. Designer fees and product pricing can be negoiated based on budget and scope. Having an ASID Designer designation indicates a design professional with training and experience as well as many years in the business. Your home can love you back!
