Rhonda and I have trusted James to teach our three sons piano for the past number of years. He is an excellent instructor with a gift for getting the most out of his students. James has been able to fill in gaps that our children had from previous instructors while musically refining them during this wonderful journey. We would highly recommend James.

Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. In this region, I'm like the grandfather of piano teachers. Some parents want their kids go to a cute young girl, but they often lack experience as teachers. There's a lot to be said for the fact that I've played piano for 50 years, and also that I've had many instructors during my long career. I've gleaned what I felt were their best traits and incorporated these techniques into my approach.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The interraction with my students is the most rewarding part of my job. Of course I love it when they learn their lessons and play well, but I get a great deal of pleasure just having fun with my students and being exposed to their wonderful variety of personalities.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I gave a 10-year old girl a gift book about music history and composers with games and fun projects. Her mom emailed me to say she found her daughter in bed that night under the covers with a flashlight reading the book!

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. That I know what's best for their child. Some parents, without either musical knowledge or teaching experience, decided I'm not challenging their kid enough or moving them along fast enough. I've had parents withdraw their kids from lessons without even talking to me about it because they think they know more than I do.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Going back to school (Tennessee State University) this spring to work on teacher certification. Already have a masters in music education, but never got licensed for classroom teaching.
