Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Be as exact as possible in defining your problem or need and be open to several possible solutions from the Candidate Consultant. Both should agree to the ultimate solution. Remember the correct solution is cheaper than "Quick Fixes" in the long run.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Vague Requirements beget many possible vague solutions. Make sure that your and any service provider sign-off on the requirements and solution.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Does the Consultant offer Part-time or Full-time Services. Does he have a full time job? Beware of someone moonlighting without the exact expertise you need.
Does the Consultant have Small Business or Large Company experience?
What industry background does the Consultant have? I.e. Government, Utilities, Transportation, Warehousing, Financial, Retail, Publishing etc.
What are the Costs and Billing Practices of the Consultant? For example: payment terms, rates, billable vs. non-billable time, travel time, Phone support, E-mail/online support, Remote support, emergency service?
Can the Consultant do handholding / training on new hardware or software?
Can the Consultant act as your agent in dealing with 3rd party Software, Hardware, Network and other Computer related vendors.
You should ultimately feel as though the consultant is working for you and has your best interests foremost in his/ her mind; if you don’t, look for another.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I try to arrive at a solution while keeping an eye on at least 3 back-up plans. I test and make sure my work is Bullet-Proof! I've been called a Pit-Bull in that I won't let go of a problem until it's solved.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. There are so many different facets to Computer Technology that each day I stay very busy performing different functions which are interesting and challenging.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. My pricing system is fairly straight forward. I work mostly on site and my rates include short travel: $65 the first hour, $50 thereafter; $50 per hour on site for long jobs; I will reduce my rate if I can work from home.
