Thumbtack Human Review
Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
I'm a true artist with a BFA in fine art and use my creativity to the max as a makeup artist. I'm also trained in color theory and understand lighting.
What do you like most about your job?
I get to meet new people everyday and make people look beautiful.
What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
Q: How did you get started as a makeup artist?
A: It was a natural progression from painting portraits and I've always been great with makeup. I started in bridal makeup on the weekends and it grew from there into what you see today.
If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
What products to purchase for my particular coloring and skin type - and what not to buy. How to save money and time.
Do you have a favorite story from your work?
I worked with a fire burn survivor and created lips brows and lashes for her - she cried - she was so happy to see her face again.
What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
It's truly an art form and as a portrait painter it's one of my gifts. We are not all great beauties as you see on TV makeup artists. Most all makeup artists in production working today full time work long hard hours on set. I personally like to blend into the background and let the stars shine on set.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Check their work - make certain their portfolio is consistent and is actually their work - and that they have credits of who they have worked with. You want a broad spectrum of different looks of makeup in different environments - studio, natural light, video, etc. Make sure they don't have ONE look and that is all they do. Really LOOK at their work.
What important information should buyers have before seeking you out? For example, someone looking to have their room painted should know how big the room is, whether or not the ceiling requires painting, if there is trimming or crown moldings, etc.
Every artist' price point is different. You're paying for THEIR artistry - shopping for comparable rates and going for the "cheapest" is not necessarily a good thing. Higher end artists cost more for a reason.
How did you decide to get in your line of work?
I love it! I have a true passion for others and making them a work of art.
What are your most common types of jobs?
Production jobs for commercials, print ads, music videos, corporate training videos.
Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
Working on a fashion shoot spread for ZINK.
Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
Yes, I'm constantly taking workshops and updating my skills. Learning airbrush is my current love.
What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
Airbrush - HDTV - always new formulas and products.
Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.
Commercial shoot for a major product launch in the fall. This particular infomercial shoot took 3 days. Cost is private.
If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.
I get paid by the day or half day plus per diem and travel.
If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?
Get a business degree first.
