A company that has operated under many different names over a period of time, weather it be 1 year or 10 should be questioned as to why.
Make sure that the technicians have a minimum of 3 years experience and / or is certified to do auto glass. Make sure that the billing address for the company and contact information is listed on the invoices. Also make sure they provide a Lifetime Nationwide No Leak Warranty.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. 1. I would like to know how an auto glass technician remembers how to take apart all the different types of vehicles?
2. I would also like to know how you dispose of the glass?
Answer 1 would be, Experience and repetition. Answer 2 would be, We donate some of the broken glass to artists in Texas and Oklahoma . We also sale the broken glass to some design firms in Oklahoma and Texas that use the broken windshields in new homes or construction projects. Such as sidewalks, flower beads and counter tops or doors.
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. The only information we need is the year, make and model of the vehicle . The description of the glass needing repaired or replaced. Our computer software will do the rest. If the software shows more than one piece of glass for the vehicle and the customer is not sure which they have , we than asked for the vin number.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. We use top quality products that are approved by the ANSI 002-2002 Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard. We all auto glass installations exceed the ANSI 002-2002 Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard. We are the only company in Allen,TX that offers a Lifetime Nationwide No Leak Warranty. We put it in writing.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. Working on the vehicles and meeting new people. Knowing that we install auto glass in a safe manner and that for every one we install that is one that is not being installed improperly. We work on every vehicles as if it where our own and as if it where our family riding in the vehicle we are working on.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. Is your job hard ? Yes it can be depending on the type of vehicle. Some windshield can weigh as little as 15 to 25lbs. Where as others can bee 75 lbs or more. Some windshields may even require tow technicians to properly and safely remove or install it. but I like a good challenge.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. We had a customer call from Lavon,TX , He said he had an animal run out in front of him and hit his windshield. He failed to mention it was a 8 point buck and it was still stuck in the windshield. We went back the next day to complete the replacement after he removed the buck.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. That windshield / Auto Glass repair and replacement are not a Do It Yourself type of job / project, it is a skilled trade and should be treated like that of a plumber or electrician. Auto Glass is a safety device and should be installed according to ANSI 002-2002 Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard. If not installed properly it could effect the way the air bags deploy in an accident and cause serious injury .
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. We all have a love for working on cars and using our hands. We enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that we are part of a skilled trade and do something that many can not. Plus we are carrying on a long time family tradition. So it has become a passion for us so to speak.
Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
A. We have a few, one of which was a 1978 Ford F 150 4x4 we replaced all rubber door and body seals as well as the windshield and back glass rubbers seals . Then installed a new Ford windshield and back glass as well as all new door glasses and vent glasses. This was a challenge because all glass had to be date coded and have the same original factory logos and codes as the original did in 1978.
The other job would be a 1965 Pontiac GTO 2 door hard top. We had to remove all the original glass and prep the areas for the vehicle to have body and paint work done . Then we had to prep all areas to reinstall the glass. We replaced all the chrome molding clips as well as replaced all the chrome trim glass moldings. All the rubbers vent glass and rear quarter glass seals had to be replaced as well as the door window felts.
Both vehicles placed best in show for their classes in nation car shows.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. Yes twice a year we meet with local vendors, suppliers and body shops and update our certifications on windshield adhesive applications as well as learning new procedures to remove and reinstall the new styles of auto glass for newly released vehicles. We are one of the few Collin County companies in the area that do this. Fact some of our fleet accounts and body shop accounts provide this service to us free of charge for providing our services to them.
We also have an in house training program that we use to train all of our employee's how to accurately and safely repair and replace auto glass according to the ANSI 002-2002 Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard.
Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
A. Our industry is a little behind on times when it comes to some things seeing how most vehicle manufactures are carrying body styles over from year to year. But the latest an most exciting would be the ability that our company now has to be able to look up ,quote and schedule jobs right from the field via a BlackBerry Mobile Device . We also have the ability to accept credit cards right from the BlackBerry Mobile Device.
We call this our Mobile Management Technology System or MMTS. Since putting the MMTS we have been able to reduce the amounts of paper and ink cartridges we use. This is not something that many independent auto glass companies have, so we feel it helps set us apart from others in the industry.
Another thing we are excited about is our 24 hour online quote and scheduling system. We have noticed a huge climb in the after hours auto glass requests. Which is great seeing how it now gives us the ability to provide customers with quotes and scheduling even when we are closed.
The next thing we did was update our website for mobile phone users. This allows BlackBerry and I -Phone users to access our site on the go.
Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.
A. One of the most recent project was mentioned above with the updating of the websites and the Mobile Management Technology System (MMTS)and it started in 2003 and we continuously update and make changes to it at least once a month.
But the most recent would be with the updating our computer servers and our phone systems. Now all calls from all service areas regardless of the number dialed rings to the main office. If the phones are not answered in 3 or 4 rings the system than searches the company directory till it finds a phone that is not in use. So in some instances you may actually be talking to the owners. If you don't get a real person, a short message gives you instructions on how to go about get a free online quote or how to schedule the job online.
Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.
A. Our pricing system is based on a number of things first would be the National Auto Glass Specifications or NAGS. This company is owned my Mitchell International and they control the list prices for all auto glass parts as well as auto body parts and medical billing as well.
We look at the NAGS list and the NAGS hours and our actual parts and materials cost on a part by part basis. we than apply our own mark up or mark down than use a complicated series of mathematical formulas applied by our point of sale system to determine the quote or price for each request.
For insurance claims the pricing method is a little different , we must bill based off of NAGS list pricing and hours and the rates the insurance companies are willing to pay per part or claim. We are one of the few industries where the insurance companies dictate our pricing. Although in some instances we have special pricing agreements with the insurance company to help save the customer time and hassles.
But in almost 89% of the insurance claims handled by After Hours Auto Glass we are able to provide a lower cash price than most insureds deductible ,thus saving the insured the hassles of filing a claim and paying a high dollar deductible and in almost all cases saving the insured $200 - $250 versus going through insurance.
Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?
A. I would tell them to get plenty of training then when done get more training. It takes about 3 years to learn the basics of auto glass replacement. Every year every make and model of vehicle can and in most cases will be different. Although some manufactures have started carrying over body styles no two installs go exactly the same . Sometimes the windshield of a 2005-2011 Ford Mustang may come out in one piece or and many. Sometimes it may only take 10 minutes to get a windshield out other times it could take 30 minutes to an hour.
So I would suggest to get plenty of training and you better like working in the heat during the summer and the cold during the winter.
Q. Write your own question and answer it.
A. What are your thoughts on the local industry.
I think the local industry for the most part is good, although we have many out of state and out of town companies advertising they are local when in fact they are not . Fact 98% of the companies that advertise on line are not even located in Allen, TX , most of those 98% show hundreds even thousand of locations across the country but when you look closer they show they are based out of a UPS Store or a Mail Box Etc. . So when looking for auto glass in Allen,Texas make After Hours AutoGlass you first call. If you choose not to use us we will give you the name of a another reputable company in the area to call.
Remember Auto Glass is a safety device its not like going out to purchase a new pair of shoes ,where you get the cheapest pair. When dealing with auto glass cheap is not always better. Fact cheap auto glass should scare you.
