  • Fellow Austinites,

I am proud to announce the launching of ActiveATX! Active ATX—Austin’s one-stop shop for all the fitness events and physical activities happening in Austin and the surrounding area—is finally up and running. From boot camps to triathlons to races, this is an all-encompassing fitness website that lists not only the myriad of physical events occurring in Austin, but also serves as a directory of all the city’s major fitness venues. ATX Outdoors, this facet of the website, lists Austin parks, hiking trails, rock climbing locations and dog parks. As a member of ActiveATX, you will be able to tap into the Austin fitness lifestyle and see firsthand why Austin is considered one of the most active cities in the nation. Members will be able to publicize their fitness events, including directory listings and ATX Outdoor locations that are not already on the website. ActiveATX is also eager to announce that it will be rolling out new features over the next few months that members will appreciate, such as videos, blogs, photos, various social media tools such as connecting with "friends,” RSVPing for events and sharing content.

For those of you who are fitness providers, the fun does not stop there. It is ActiveATX's vision to become the consolidated advertising forum for Austin fitness events. This will be the place where Austinites will discover what events are happening around town, register for them and then participate in them—all through ActiveATX. Do you have a free bootcamp? How about a free Saturday rowing class? Are you promoting a run to raise awareness for breast cancer?

Please create an account and feel free to let us know what you think; we welcome feedback. If there is something you would like to see or if you think something should be done differently, let us know. This is your website! Active ATX is a site for all active Austinites to have no excuses for a lazy Saturday or not knowing of anything healthy to do. Additionally, please forward this email to anyone who you think would benefit from what this site has to offer. We need your help!

Let’s Keep Austin Active! One workout at a time...

You WILL see results if you train with Jesse. After a two month break from working out, I've trained with Jesse only four times, and I can already see my abs again. Even better, he is so well-educated on fitness and the body, he was able to give me the exercises I needed to cure my knee injury. I was better just in time to complete the 2010 Austin Marathon.

On top of this, Jesse is able to key in to the individual needs of his clients and customize their workouts, challenging them without asking for the impossible. He always gives his clients positive feedback to reward them for their efforts and to motivate them further. This is actually my favorite thing about his coaching style: he has the knowledge and inspirational personality to push you past your physical and MENTAL limits. When I workout with him, he motivates me to do so much more than I think I can, and I leave the gym feeling like I can conquer the world. The workout improves the rest of my day, making all my work tasks seem doable and exciting.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Working with individuals who are looking to improve their body composition and just feel like they are in better shape.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Be ready to bust your butt and work physically harder that you have your entire life. A few months or hard work now, will reap a huge return on investment years down the road.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. If I were a customer, I would wish that I knew how big of a difference the CrossFit methodology has on people's lives. I have seen people come off their statin medication, diabetes injections and have improved mobility. Especially people battling lifelong issues, this makes a world of difference. It changes people from the outside in. When people start feeling better about themselves; their appearance, the way they look, feel and perform, it creates a metamorphosis on the inside. This is what we call the outside-in approach.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I focus on getting my clients the results that they want and to achieve the goals that we set together. I take pride in my clients' progress and that is my number one priority.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love helping people make life long changes that will greatly improve their quality of life, happiness and overall well-being.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Q: I feel like I need to get in shape before I start committing to such an aggressive workout regimen. What do you think?

A: Our program design is infinitely scalable. That means if any exercise is too difficult to do, then there is a scaling option which makes each movement possible for each individual. We emphasize intensity, but that means that we need to choose appropriate movements for each person's level of fitness. It would make no sense to have someone doing 20 pull-ups in the middle of a workout if it took them 20 minutes to complete because that impedes the ability to have intensity. Every program is designed for the individual, not for the masses.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. "Through Jesses nutritional approach, I was able to reduce my blood lipid levels significantly and will be off my medication in the near future. I was able to do this through adopting a Paleolithic diet for three months, and will continue this for the rest of my life. Right now I have cut my cholesterol and blood pressure medication in half!"

Cholesterol numbers:
Cholesterol 126 Prior 158 20% Reduction
Triglycerides 49 Prior 71 31% Reduction
HDL 47 Prior 52 (The higher the better on this one)
LDL 69 Prior 92 25% Reduction

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. That fitness is a lifetime pursuit. There is no shortcut to hard work, commitment and dedication to your goals.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. Fitness has always been a passion of mine. When I left College with a Business degree I got a job in sales at a computer company. After three months of not liking what I was doing, I decided to do what I loved and I have never looked back.

"Love what you do or do something else!"

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. We had a client go from 331 pounds as an insulin dependent diabetic to under 260 pounds. He is a new person both physically and his personality.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I am always reading current and relevant information, go to seminars and certifications and trying out other people's classes and training programs. If you aren;t continually immersed in your field, then you stagnate.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. CrossFit is still a burgeoning topic in athletic development. We are seeing things that we have never seen before in human performance and it is shifting the industry from corporate globo-gyms to smaller, more personable "boxes".

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. Worked with a lady for a little over 6 months. If you add it all up, she came out of the experience with paying about $100 for every pound she lost (25), she looks, feels and performs better and she worked through some lifelong issues that she had battled sporadically throughout her life. She "is a new person!"

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. $50 @ Westlake CrossFit
$75 @ Off-site
$100 @ In-home

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Do not do this because it looks cool, or because it is a hobby. You either have it or you don't. If you are constantly working out, reading about other types of fitness philosophies and consider yourself to be in the pursuit of elite fitness, then this is probably the profession for you!

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Q: Why CrossFit?

A: Short answer. Because it works and is hands down the most effective system that I have ever come across. If there is something better or fitter individuals, prove it!
