Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask yourself why you need a website and what is it's purpose. It's helpful to write down short and long term goals for your website. Narrowing down the goals of the website will help you focus on its purpose and generate ideas. Start with a better plan. Finish with a better website.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Ask about both startup and ongoing maintenance costs. Initial costs to start a website can be minimal but a successful website requires frequent monitoring and periodic updates. These take time and money. The more you can do yourself, the lower your costs so ask if you could be trained to manage your site. Depending on the technology used, many business owners can manage their own e-commerce sites.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. 1) Do you provide all of the services I need to build, host, market and manage my website?

2) Will I need to maintain the site when it's done or pay someone else to do it for me?

3) How will I get people to come to my site?

4) Do you provide website analytics?

5) What SEO (Search Engine Optimization) services do you offer?

6) Do you provide secure (SSL) connections for e-commerce? (if applicable)

7) Do you offer a variety of hosting options (shared, dedicated, virtual) in case my business expands?

8) Do you have email marketing services?

9) Do you provide logo and banner design services?

10) Can I see some of your previous work?

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Every day there's something new. New ideas, new people and a new challenge. Helping others is the most rewarding part of the business. I also enjoy learning how different companies work to achieve their goals and feel fortunate to be a part of it.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. My most recent project was for a visually impaired employee organization. The site is federalview.org. They approached me in late May and wanted to have their site up and ready for a conference scheduled for mid-June. Adding to the challenge of a short deadline, they wanted online registration for their conference with the ability for participants to select meal choices along with various payment options. The site was designed with accessibility in mind so that assistive technologies could be used to not only read the information on the site, but register for the conference.
