Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

I initially hired Ruben Hernandez to complete an interior painting job in our home. When he first arrived at my home for the initial painting evaluation he pointed out several other updates to the home he and his team were qualified to perform. These additional projects included fixing a faulty toilet, a leaky kitchen sink pipe, a leaky skylight, and replacing the carpet for the second story. While the conversion of one hallway from a dark grey to light beige was done well as was the repair of the skylight (we haven’t seen any more leaks), the rest of the service was very poor. Regarding the painting portion of the job, there are several spots throughout the kitchen and dining room where you can actually still read the word “cream” where Ruben wrote the color on the wall before painting. Paint marks were also left in several places from toilets to door knobs and on several light switch fixtures. Regarding the kitchen sink pipe, somewhere during the repair process they decided we needed a completely new faucet. I returned home to find the cheapest, lowest end replacement they could find. Ruben’s explanation was they simply needed to install something quickly to get the job done. I told him which type of faucet I preferred and asked them to change it. They did change out the faucet but did so very poorly – the spray nozzle did not retract properly and was leaky. The final job we agreed to, the removal and replacement of the second-story carpet, did not actually even get completed. I cannot put into words the disappointment and frustration my husband and I endured regarding the poor customer service over the carpet job. Even after my husband and I told Ruben exactly what carpet we wanted from Home Depot, which we were willing to wait and pay for, he did his best to find a cheaper version elsewhere. I was nine months pregnant at the time, and long story short, Ruben’s continual delay in starting the carpet job led to us not being able to move into the home until after our child was born! I had already paid him up front for materials so we continued to put our faith in him and he completely left us hanging. Not only that, the amount we paid up front for the carpet was $200 more than the quote he gave us for all the jobs, and even after finally admitting he could not complete the carpet job he did not return our $200! Hire this company at your own risk.
Doxa Construction Inc.'s reply
Yes, we started working With Miss. Patricia. She told us that this was a rental house and now she wanted to come back and live in it again. Initially we were contract to paint all of the inside walls of the property. We covered the concrete floor in the 1 st floor of the property and the carpet on stairs and second floor so that they wouldn't stain with the paint. We did our job and we came back on Monday to do the final touch up. We then found stains in the walls because she had a leak on her roof. Water was coming through the walls and stained them so our paint work was damaged. We address this problem to her and her husband and they ask for an estimate to fix the roof problem. We provided the estimate and we agreed on the price and made the roof repairs and sealed all corners so water would stop coming in. We then painted the walls again and when she came back she gave good comments about the paint; nice work, very professional. She requested an estimate to paint the concrete floor inside. We provide the estimate and we explain that she had several foundation problems and we agreed to paint the floors under her own risk of the cracks and un-level of the floor. Well, a few days later we saw water spots on floor in the kitchen area, she had a leak under the kitchen sink, her faucet was broken under the nut area and need to be replaced. We address this to her and she approved to replace the faucet, and she select the kitchen faucet. She also requested a estimated to replace the carpet because the carpet was stained and in bad shape. She wanted a Martha Stewart carpet. We agree on a price. She wanted the carpet in 2 weeks and we informed her that home depot would take 3 to 4 weeks to deliver the color she wanted. She got upset and want her money back, and we agreed. She also requested other extra works on her property that we have her signature as approval on, and she had not paid for the extras and the extra paint job that we did, at that point. We never said we would not complete the carpet job, we mentioned that the carpet was not going to be in on time, so our installation work will be not completed on the time she requested. Like I mention she requested her money back and we requested that she paid our services and we agreed to interchange checks. Regarding the $ 200.00 this is because of the kitchen faucet, we send her a cashier check by certified mail and we have the copies. Unfortunately there was to much pressure on time and the decisions needed to be made because of Miss. Patricia's pregnancy. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The contractor is nice and he can BS a lot (sorry my language)and show pictures of previous work that he did. The only work that they do well is demolish and make a mess. I spent around 10000$ on the master bathroom and the guest bathroom where everything started to leak and it caused water damage in the my ceiling, the slope on the bathroom floor was wrong that caused standing water which caused mildew and a bad smell under the bath tub. And when trying to contact Doxa they declined to answer and I guess blocked my number. Doxa even hires un registered labor I had to replace all the tiles and the utilities due to the bad work that it even caused some of my siding to rot. It cost 12000 to redo everything again. And by the way when I contacted thumbtack they said they didn't have anyone called DOXA as a member until i was looking into my dashboard today and I saw the name come up under one of my projects which i did 2 yrs ago.
