Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Most importantly when looking for a guitar instructor, ask for references. At least three to be safe. It's also a good idea to ask those references if they know anyone else who uses that instructor. Clients often network really well and will know someone else who is using that instructor. This way you can feel more sure that you are getting the real story on your instructor.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. A lot of people starting out think that they have to learn traditionally or they are doing it wrong. This is the attitude of many instructors and it causes most people to quit before they given themselves a real chance to succeed. Lessons should have a good foundation with curriculum in music theory and skills but a good instructor will learn how to teach those things and address the individual students wants and desire for playing guitar. One size does NOT fit all!

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. They should ask the instructor what their methods of teaching are. Do they have a set curriculum for everyone or will they get to pick some of their on songs to play? How long have they taught? What is their turn over rate? Is teaching their full time job or are they just trying to get by until their band hits it big?
