I hired Mike when I needed to sell my home and move upstate. I was reluctant in hiring him because he didn't have a crew. He promised me that he would get the job done in the time frame he said. I hired him on his word and was surprised by his efforts. He had his work down to a science. I was home most of the time to check on him and he proved his word to me. My new roof looked great. We had a heavy rain a couple of days later and my wife and I looked everywhere for any leaks. We didn't find any. Even though he had no crew he worked hard and did a great job. I would certainly hire him again if we ever move back to Texas and need a roofer.

Several years ago, my home badly needed a new roof. Mike did a complete 3-layer tear-off and replaced all the decking. He did work alone but the work was done quickly. I was very satisfied with the results and with the cost.
Recently, after moving to a different house, we added another room. I called on Mike to do the roofing. Again, I was very satisfied with his work. I won't hesitate to call on him again if the need arises. He has also done some sealing on my sister's and daughter's travel trailers.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Custom Residential Homes, and all other kinds of homes.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Check their references, and try to go see some of their work.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Never allow anyone do the job with staple/nail guns. It's cheap and useless. Many roofing companies hire new inexperienced young men and women to use staple/nail guns, and they have no idea how to use them. The sun's heat can easily cause shingles to work loose from a staple. High winds will cause the loose shingles to blow off.

It's always best for a homeowner to be home while their old roof is being removed, and before the new one is applied. It's very important to replace bad decking and repair sections of bad rafters.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. The total roofing squares of the home or office.

The pitch of the roof.

What kind of shingle. 3 tab or heavy laminated.

If replacing an old roof, is new metal edging preferred.

How many valleys are there in order to estimate the amount of valley metal.

How many pipes and diameters of the pipes. What kind of pipes.

How many chimneys and skylights.

How many wind turbines or power vents need replacing.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I hand nail only. I do not use nail/staple guns which make work cheap and useless. Many roofers only care about speed, and moving on to the next job. I do each home as though it were my own.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Satisfying every customer. Being able to step back at each job and see the beauty of the home or office with it's new look.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How much? How long will it take? I give them an estimate and let them know a time frame in which I feel the work can be done.

What shingles are the best? I give them a variety to choose from as well as the manufacturers warranties.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I was trained by the best man in the business in my area. I started in 1995 and take the time to do my work the best that it can be done. My work looks top notch with no leakage upon completion.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. Getting a great turn key job by my service before they decide to hire me.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I was thinking about a career change when a long time friend and roofing contractor needed more crew members in September 1995.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. There are two: Roofing an addition to my parents home, and re-roofing Dan Brown's home that passed away. Dan Brown was an old boss of mine and a highly respected man in his community. He was in the surveying profession.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Yes I'm always looking for new products that will provide customers with easier choices.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. There's a very interesting new shingle on the market that looks amazing. It's a plastic design to withstand hail damage. It has a futuristic look to it.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. Re-roofing the home of Dan Brown (recently passed). He was a highly respected man in his community. I do not know the cost as I was partnered with my long time friend and roofing contractor Sandlin Roofing. It was a job he sold.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. My pricing system is simple. My labor fees depend on how many stories a home has as well as the pitch of the roofs.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. You better love hard work. You better learn from the best if you can.
