  • Preparing the soil for sod installation...

Proper soil preparation will get your lawn started right and help keep it healthy. Begin by removing any existing growth and having the soil tested to correct any problems. Most state universities test soil for a nominal fee. You'll also find private soil-testing labs and private (search "soil testing [your state]" on the Web for options).

Adding commercially available composted organic matter helps most soils by making it more porous and increasing its fertility. As a guideline, spread a 3- to 4-inch-thick layer over the area and till it into the soil. Spread any fertilizers and soil amendments over the area at the same time.

    * Prepare the soil by tilling in organic matter and amendments such as dolomitic limestone or soil sulfur if a soil test shows they're needed.
    * Kill weeds and weed seeds by baking them under a layer of thin clear plastic for two weeks under summer sun. For faster, surer weed kill, use glyphosate – Feb 01, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Our most common types of jobs are landscape design, lawn/landscape maintenance, hardscapes, concrete, pavers, landscape lighting, drainage, irrigation, fencing, sod installation, plant transplanting and layout solutions.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Know who you are working with. In a world where fraud, theft, and cheating are ramped; integrity, honesty, and reliability are a rare find. "Hire the person and not the promise"...its been my saying for years. If you hired a contractor to provide a service that came with a 90 day warranty and something went wrong 1 day after the warranty expired, can you call on the company? They say, in business, it's never personal. I say, in business, it's always personal.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The importance of Landscape maintenance. Gardens are designed every day that look great on paper and when first planted but look pretty awful two years later.

It has been said that poorly designed gardens can be successful if maintained well. Conversely, well designed gardens which are poorly maintained are usually failures. The design of any garden, large or small, must include maintenance considerations in the early planning stages.

Unlike a building or structure which looks its best the day it is finished, gardens should look good when finished but improve each year. Landscaping, as opposed to architecture, is never static. Gardens are complex living organisms which not only change seasonally, but also grow and mature through time. The resulting change from the time of installation to later years is quite significant.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. If you need Sod installed, you will need the following:

Sqft of area to be sodded-This is calculated by measure the length and the width of the area. Multiply the length times the width. Divide the sum by 450. This tells you how many pallets of grass you are going to need.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Whether we're landscaping a retail complex or mowing a front lawn, Chrio Landscape & Design will make every effort to meet or exceed your expectations because we want to be your number one source for landscape construction services for years to come. And we take customer service to the highest level… by making customer service our top priority.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. What I like best about my job is the joy of knowing that each time we complete a project, no matter how big or small, we exceeded someones expectation of what Landscape should be. From concept to creation, we are servants of the trade. We develop total outdoor environments that you cannot merely live with but will want to live in.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I always wish customers knew my commitment to them. Whether we're landscaping a retail complex or mowing a front lawn, Chrio Landscape & Design Co. will make every effort to meet or exceed your expectations because we want to be your number one source for landscape construction services for years to come. And we take customer service to the highest level… by making customer service our top priority.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I actually was on a completely different career path. I went to school for engineering. My father started a Landscape company when I was still in grade school. My brother and I would help him on weekends to earn extra money. I developed a love for not the work, but for customer relations. I would watch my father shake hands, make deals, and gain the trust of customers. I wanted it.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. Baymont Inn & Suites in Beaumont, TX. We were awarded the landscape & irrigation contract. When we got there it was lifeless. It was a very big job that took about 3 weeks to complete. The turn out was incredible!

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Technological advancements in both material and method come to the country from sources within the country and from abroad. Product and equipment manufacturers in all of the worlds developed countries continually bring new items to the landscape industry. In order to effectively hold our place among the elite of this industry, we seek out and participate in educational courses.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. How can customers get updates about you?

Customers can follow us at Twitter for to the minute updates on whats going on projects, gardening tips, scheduling and more. We also encourage going to the website or email us.
