About JJ Music & Magic

hired 6 times on Thumbtack

I have two services. First, I give drum and percussion lessons, and I am also available for performances. Secondly, I perform magic shows for kids.

I give lessons to beginner and intermediate drum and percussion students of all ages. I have been playing the drums since I was 6 years old. I was in the school band through college.

I have two magic shows for kids. I have a smaller show which is very interactive with the kids. It's perfect for a birthday party located at your home for up to about 20 people or so. There are giveaways such as blowout streamers, stickers, and candy, so you don't have to waste money on these things.

I also have a stage show for larger audiences which stars "Becky the Bunny" as my lovely assistant. This show is perfect for churches, schools, and anywhere else that has a stage. Your kids will remember this for the rest of their life!.

Our entire experience with Jason was great. The communication was clear throughout the entire process of planning the event. He and his assistant were professional, fun and the magic performance was fantastic. You can tell Jason has spent many years of practice. The children loved the show! Thank you Jason and Becky the Bunny!

I was the Lucky Silent auction winner of JJ Music and magic for a stage show, which i then donated to the elementary school i worked in. His show was funny and the magic tricks were really good. I was so impressed that i hired him for my sons 5th birthday party and his show did not disappoint. I would recommend him to anyone.

Jason was a class act. His communication made me feel very much at ease. He was sure to give me clear understanding and followed up to requests and questions. He showed up 35 mins early...which was comforting. The kids loved his act. Their engagement was just what the party needed. I even had passer by-ers stop to watch or get his information. The only thing I hate is he didn't do the giant bunny...mostly due to lacking an assistant for the day and space at my venue.

The client paid for the smaller show that my assistant does not appear in. She appears in my stage show which is a more expensive show.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. For drum lessons, he/she needs to own a drum set so he/she can practice and drive everyone else crazy!

For magic shows, I need to know the type of event i.e. how many kids will be there, will this be at your house or on a stage for a larger audience, etc.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Do I combine the music with the magic? No. The drum and percussion services are different from the magic services.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. In terms of music, my Dad is a drummer, and I started playing a drum set at age 6. In terms of magic, I was in the 8th Grade, and I had to do a science fair project. I went to the library to look up subjects, but I completely forsook the project when I found a book on magic.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. Since my business is two-fold, I will give two answers. First, I gave percussion lessons to a 5th Grader for a year. Most 6th Graders go to Beginning Band, but he tried out for the Katy Junior High Band, and he made their second to top band as a 6th Grader. I give him credit more than myself because he practiced hard.

I did my first kids stage magic show at a church in Katy in early June 2011 with an assistant, and the kids had a blast! That was a huge step forward for me.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. For drum/percussion lessons, I charge $20 for 1/2 hour or $30 for one hour. If you live 20 miles or more from Southwest Houston, I will charge $10 extra.

For magic shows, I charge $75 for a small event such as a birthday party at a house with up to 20 kids. For the kids stage magic show, I charge a minimum of $100 to cover the cost of my assistant. The price can go up if you need anything extra such as the hostess being sawn in half for example.

Q. What is your greatest strength?

A. Since this is a part time with few customers, I can keep my rates low and affordable while focusing my attention to make sure you are completely satisfied. I will get to know the drum/percussion student well enough to know where he/she's at and how I can make him/her better. I can plan a magic show suited to your needs without distraction to make sure the audience goes home talking about the show for a long time.

Q. What are you currently working on improving?

A. I am currently trying to come up with an adult stage magic show that features illusions and smaller magic that captivates adult audiences. This service is not yet available, but I will let you know when the show is ready!
