A. Q: What do you do if you don't have a song that a guest is requesting?

Even with 21,000+ songs that DJ Ray Pena brings to every event, there are a (rare) few songs that slip through the cracks and are not obtained previous to your event. This is due to a number of reasons. Some examples are: the song is on the radio but not yet for sale, the song is old and out of print (therefore unobtainable even for purchase), the song was in a movie/t.v. show and was never released for radio play, the song is a viral internet video and never professionally released, the requested song is a remix (bootleg) and not available due to copyright infringement or the song simply has never been played on the radio and was never in the billboard top 100 (or top 40 for its genre).

A: DJ Ray Pena uses a customized iPhone4 that uses 3G to connect to the internet and pull up anything anywhere that the world wide web provides. DJ Ray Pena is able to make immediate purchases from iTunes and Amazon music from any location in the United States (Government internet blackout areas excluded of course). Fortunately, youtube has a massive library of music that can be played through DJ Ray Pena's DJ rig. If that is not enough there is a good chance that the guest has it on their phone or on CD in their car. Both of which can be played and no one would know the difference. If the song is so obscure (it would have to be at this point), that it isn't available on the internet for play or purchase I would make sure that I am not looking for a semi-song lyric rather than a song name. If that is not the case, then I would have to resort to most DJ's first and only option and apologize for not being able to meet their request. However, I would still offer to find other similar songs and even give song suggestions based on the information gathered for the song that was unobtainable.

A. "Why should I hire a DJ instead of just using an iPod?"

Have you ever been through your friends music collection? It is personal to them (only) and is guaranteed to not have all your favorites. This is how your guests will feel about your personal music collection. Try taking requests with anyone's personal music collection, and you will find it difficult to complete a full hour of requests (much less four hours of requests). Track selection is important. DJ Ray Pena has a collection of 21,000+ top 40 hits from the 1960's to today. There isn't an iPod available that can hold the 450 gigs of music that DJ Ray Pena brings to every event.

Also, DJ Ray Pena has been collecting music for 14 years. It takes time and lots of it. New music comes out every Tuesday. Music collecting never ends. DJ Ray Pena spends approx. 20 hours a week doing nothing but researching and purchasing the most current and most popular hits (new and old).

Don't forget the cost of music. Purchasing music (at its' cheapest) can range from $0.69 to $1.29 per song. If you spent the value of your DJ service ($1000.00) in just music you would have approx. 800 songs. This would not prepare you enough for song requests. You could download illegally, but you risk getting caught and possibly serving jail time. Plus, illegal downloads are of poor quality (128kbps avg.). 100% of DJ Ray Pena's music library (21,000+) is at 320kbps. In other words, Studio and Concert quality.
