My name is Nancy Lorenzen, and I am not the lawyer that most people are expecting.
To begin with, I had a full life and career as a technical writer before I went to law school. I graduated from law school at the age of 40, not 25. When people come to my office with a problem, I have the life experience to understand their problem a lot better than a lawyer who went straight into the profession from college and who has never had a job title other than attorney at law.
I’ve been married, divorced, and remarried. I’m also the parent of a grown son. I live in a middle class house in a middle class neighborhood. I drive a Honda Civic instead of a BMW. I answer my own phone. Heck, I even cut my own grass.
In many ways, my life more closely resembles my client’s lives than my colleagues’ lives. And I’m okay with that. I think that what my clients want is someone who not only has the competence to fix their problems, but also the experience to understand their problems.
Question and answer
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Don't hire a lawyer you don't like. Especially in family law situations, you need to trust your lawyer to deal with you while you go through some of the hardest emotional territory you've ever traveled. If you don't like your lawyer, it's going to make that journey that much more difficult.
Interview lawyers. Talk to more than one. Hire the one that you can afford that you like best.
To help with that, our initial 30-minute consultation is on me. I want to make sure I can help you. You need to be sure you want me to help you.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I was a "real person" before I was a lawyer. I understand that finding time away from work to go see a lawyer can be really difficult, especially if you don't want to tell your boss you need to see a lawyer. That's why I offer appointments during your lunchtime and after regular working hours. You can make an appointment to see me on your time, not your job's time.
I give very personal legal service. You don't have to fight your way through a bunch of assistants and paralegals to speak to me. I treat my clients like human beings instead of like just another file with a name on it that appears on my desk. It's surprising how many clients tell me that this is unusual behavior for an attorney.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I truly enjoy helping people navigate what may be the scariest or most difficult thing that's ever happened to them.
