Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. You should always know how a financial adviser is compensated and if they have Customer Disputes, Disciplinary, and Regulatory Events disclosed about them. You can check with FINRA & the SEC.

Interview several financial advisers before making a decision. Focus on finding a planner, if investments and insurance is all someone talks about, they are probably selling and not really planning.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Registered Investment Advisers are held to a fiduciary standard (best interest of the client). Registered Representatives are held to a suitability standard only. Fiduciaries have the highest standard of care in regards to their clients.

Often fees and expenses are not fully disclosed. It is important to always ask what fees are being charged and what those charges represent.

Most advisers are sales people. They do not provide investment analysis; they simply use their own firm’s resources to make recommendations to clients.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What experience do you have?
What are your qualifications?
What services do you offer?
What is your approach to financial planning?
Will you be the only person working with me?
How will I pay for your services?
How much do you typically charge?
Could anyone besides me benefit from your recommendations?
Have you ever been publicly disciplined for any unlawful or unethical actions in your professional career?
Can I have it in writing?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. What are your financial goals?
What are your financial fears?
