I offer group and private martial arts instruction and supplies.

My instruction is shotokan karate based with elements of aikido, boxing, jiu jitsu, judo, American kempo karate, mixed martial arts, muay thai kickboxing, tai chi, wrestling, and weapons and weapon defense.

I offer practical self-defense training.

I have been teaching martial arts professionally since 1992. I specialize in the teaching of private and semi-private lessons.

At Martial Arts Refinery, we work on developing the whole person: body, mind, and soul. Training builds confidence, balance, agility, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and heightened awareness. It will extend your life, reduce stress, and improve your fitness.

I am a Christian Army Chaplain Candidate and have a Masters in Divinity. I require some Bible memorization and understanding for rank advancement. I also offer spiritual direction.

Thanks and blessings,

Sensei Frank Baik

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Try it out some of the classes you will be taking before signing any contracts. (Don't imagine that group lessons will be like introductory private lessons).

Most studios will offer you a free week or more. Take advantage of it! If you like your experience check out the fine print in the contract and make sure that you can get out if your injured or move.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Generally the more belts a studio has, the faster it will be advance. And the more expensive it will be. (Each belt promotion requires a test and payment, and more belts means more frequent tests and advancement).

Think about what you want from a studio. There are studios geared towards the sport, and others geared toward self defense. Some that teach 1 style, and others that teach a blend. Make sure you know what you want, and that you are going to get what your looking for.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How long have you been teaching?

What style do you teach?

Are you insured?

Who do you answer to?

Are you affiliated with a Martial Arts sanctioning organization? Which one(s)?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Studies show that the average person is willing to travel 7 miles to martial arts. Distance is a limiting factor over the long run. How committed you are, and how convenient training is should be a factor in deciding where you want to train.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love watching students grow and develop. As their self defense skills develop, there is also natural growth in confidence, flexibility, endurance, overall fitness, leadership ability, strength, and a spiritual awareness. It doesn't get too much more rewarding then seeing kids unsure of themselves, grow into confident and self assured individuals evidencing maturity and leadership.

Testimonials

My 11 year old daughter has been with MA Refinery for about 1.5 years. Kids learn self defense moves, have fun and get a great workout. Blended MA styles with basic techniques include choke hold release, wrist grab release, blocks (upper/lower body), punches/kicks. Advanced students include lessons in judo throws and spinning kicks. Sensei Frank is really good with kids, firm but not scary. Atmosphere is informal and relaxed. Some contact sparring. Minimal emphasis on competition. Encourages good sportsmanship and respect. Good class for basic self defense skills. My kid always enjoys the class.
