- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
There are a lot of pet sitters out there and a lot of directories. Narrow down what it is that you are looking for. If you are looking for someone who you can just hand off your key to, give them a few bucks, and be on your way, try asking the neighbor kid or checking craigslist. If you are looking for someone more professional and trustworthy with insurance, references, and a website, who will take the time to care for your furry family and your home more thoroughly, google the person's first and last name and their listing title. If they are reputable and professional, you should find several other profiles, a business website, and testimonials. Most pet sitters know other pet sitters, so let them know who you've contacted and ask questions about the ones they've heard of. Oftentimes, even if a pet sitter is booked or doesn't serve your area, they can recommend another sitter. Many sitters have a focus. It may big dogs, small dogs, cats, multiple pets, training, grooming, special needs pets, overnights, or visits only etc. If you have a unique situation, describe it in your initial communication with the sitters you contact. Be prepared to meet one or more sitters in your home with your pets before the date the care is to begin. Some sitters charge for this meeting and some don't. Before this meeting, make sure you know their prices, the types of payment they accept, and whether they are available on the dates you need. Finally, have an extra key, emergency contact information, and vet information ready. Be ready to pay in advance, and ask for references at the interview.
