We have 19 instructors who teach voice, piano, guitar, bass, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and ukulele.

Our instructors are independent contractors, so they can have their own students off site in Salt Lake City, Provo, Orem, and Ogden.

When we generate leads to the conservatory, they are the property of Utah Conservatory, not our independent contractors.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Be positive, not offering opinion or criticism, but rather asking students what they like about what they do, and then what they would like to change. Instruction is a collaborative process, which encourages them to evaluate their effectiveness, which raises their self-esteem. It's a consultation, not a lecture.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How to focus my attention, how not to fall into interpretative traps, and inhibit my abilities. I would like to know how to not introvert my attention on myself, and transfer that energy to pulling out a performance from the student.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How friendly are they? Are they interested in helping me find joy in the music? Can they help me share that joy with others? Can they help me discover the traps?
