I am an experienced accompanist in many settings and also have nearly 30 years' experience teaching private piano to students of all ages and levels and to groups of adults. I use a broad-based approach, covering many genres and periods of music, and include reading skills, theory, history, and play-by-chord and play-by-ear applications.
I am a published composer and have several pieces originally published with Mylkas Music Press which are now owned and circulated by Alfred Publishing. I have recently released a self-published project of 8 piano solos in New Age, pop and jazz styling at a medium level of difficulty entitled, "Every Thought of You". The book and CD are available in Salt Lake City area music stores or from my website at
I have experience teaching half-day piano workshops through the New School of American Music, Chico, CA, using chord-style approach to adults for several years. In addition, I am interested in offering consulting services to teachers who are looking for new approaches to old problems or who are just getting started in the piano teaching profession.
I love sharing the gift of music and feel enriched by the lives of the many varied people I meet in this profession. It is rewarding in itself to sit by young students each week and watch them grow as musicians and people. It has been a wonderful blessing to have had these experiences, and I am energized and excited about the years to come and all that there is to continue to learn and share with others!
A. Take time to evaluate the combination of personalities, the student and the teacher and how well they are suited to working together. Inquire of the prospective new teacher about his or her education, experience, teaching philosophy, relational approach. Request an interview session before committing to lessons. Sometimes a trial lesson or two is the best way to decide. Once you have determined that this teacher is a good fit, be patient, be present, be supportive but not smothering to either your child or the teacher but DO communicate well and often and do be enthusiastic and firm about your child's committment over the long term.
A. Many private teachers do not have a business license and the presence it affords. I am also diversified in that I teach, compose, am offering consulting services and sell tangible goods-honey and print music.
A. I love the contact with people on a long term basis. Teaching yields rewards over a the long term so, while satisfaction may not always be immediate, it is long lasting once it is realized. It is truly an investment in the lives of others. I love seeing students of all ages mature and blossom as musicians and as people.
A. Piano and various areas of music have been my life for as long as I can remember. While I have had many side interests along the way, music has been a constant companion and something that I always continued or return to. It was natural to want to share this gift with others and, once I got a taste of the rewards of teaching it to others, I was committed. It was a very natural direction to go and I received encouragement from family and friends along the way.
