Learn to sing with power and confidence!

I'm accepting voice students of all ages and skill ranges. I'm experienced and able to teach in all styles including, rock, pop, classical, and jazz. If you're looking to learn to sing with proper technique, avoid and minimize vocal damage, extend your range, and sing with more power and confidence I can help.

I also teach guitar and songwriting. By teaching these three things in conjunction I have had a lot of success with helping students make their own music instead of just singing things by everyone else!

With my students I have a track record of gaining quick and significant results in vocal ability and skill. I work hard to make lessons fun and entertaining as well as educational.

I have degrees in vocal performance as well as music education. Some of my vocal accomplishments include:

-Performed with the Salt Lake Vocal Artists, the Utah Chamber Artists, and the Deseret Chamber singers
-Session recording artist for film, television, and video games
-3 time winner of the Collegiate level NATS (National
Association for Teachers of Singing) competition for the state
of Montana
-Featured soloist in choral tour of Europe
-Featured baritone soloist in Mendelssohn's "Elijah" performed
for the 2009 Mendelssohn Symposium at Montana State
University.
-Performed in 5 operas in everything from lead roles to small
roles and chorus positions with the Inter-mountain Opera
Company and Montana State University opera productions.
-Assistant director of the MSU University Chorus, Section
Leader in the MSU Chorale and Montanans, winner of the
Cindy Easton Award (A peer voted award for leadership.)
-Founder, organizer, and leader of Montana's premier
collegiate acapella group.
-Etc.

My daughter has been taking singing lessons at Gallatin Music for over 3 years. DJ is very knowledgable in music theory and teaches different kinds of music from jazz, Italian, opera, contemporary, top 40, gospel and allows my daughter to explore all. DJ is very patient, funny and talented and somehow knows just how to deal with my teenage daughter encouraging practice and when necessary home work. We as a family have opened our home to DJ and enjoy his friendship.

I have worked with DJ for almost a year. I started with no confidence. With weekly hard work and practice I have gained more confidence and I have gone from a 10% ability to about an 80% ability. DJ makes the experience fun and truly focuses on the positives while encouraging improvement on the negatives. He definitely knows what he is teaching. I am TRULY grateful for all DJ has done for me.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Look for someone who has more than just degrees (those are important as well) but someone who is a great singer themselves. It is hard to teach proper technique when you haven't mastered it yourself!

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Trust your natural voice. By trying to move away and sound like someone else while singing you are only robbing yourself of your voice.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I don't necessarily subscribe to one school of thought for vocal instruction. I combine elements from many of them but just strongly focus on using your natural voice in a healthy and efficient way. By doing this my students have a track record of gaining range, power, and ease of use with their voices!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love helping people learn to master something they have always either loved doing or have always wanted to do. I got my degree in Music Education but I have found that what I really love and am really passionate about is not necessarily working with large classes but one on one.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. What is the hardest thing to learn about singing? My answer is typically that the hardest thing to learn is that your natural voice is more than adequate for singing, it is almost always much better than what happens when you try too hard!

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. Music has always been my passion and I absolutely love the idea of helping pass that passion on!
