Introduction: When a student comes to this studio. They should not expect the normal, regular vocal lessons that they have to go to week after week, year after year. They should expect to learn quickly, utilize all the information, practice what they get in their lesson, and advance incredibly quickly. There is no reason a dedicated singer can't become an expert in just a short time! And YOU can learn how to do it! The thing that I like the very most about teaching, is the look that my students get when they finally realize that THEY CAN SING, and do it well! To them, its a whole new world, and you can tell that they are loving every minute of it!

John Finley is not your average cookie-cutter, typical voice teacher. He is highly trained and knows all the ins and outs of singing. If you are looking for someone who can train you to be a professional performer, look no further. I started working with John through my high-school talent performances. His advice was so specialized to my needs and he was always so patient and helpful that my mom and me decided to sign up in the studio so I could get one-on-one lessons. He is great at picking songs for me that worked with my voice. My range increased so much within just a few lessons, I was amazed! He knows all of the little tricks that deal with the right coordination and projecting. He taught me how to put on a real performance which I myself was extremely satisfied with! John is very professional and timely. He will have you work hard so you will be able to see results quickly, but is extremely kind, fun, and personable as well. I could tell that he cared a lot about my progress and would always go above and beyond. It is my honest and most sincere opinion that lessons at FSFMA will get you further than any other teacher or class could.

I had the privilege of taking a few lessons with John, whilst I was in Salt Lake for a few months. Never have I gained so much vocally in such a short space of time. After several years of vocal lessons and reaching a point of sheer frustration with my vocal abilities, I had almost entirely lost my love of singing. However, in a mere three weeks after I signed up at the studio, I learned more about my voice and myself as a performer than I had in my previous fifteen years of study. John is not only a gifted teacher but also an amazingly encouraging coach and mentor! His relaxed yet enthusiastic approach creates an enjoyable learning atmosphere, and his wealth of knowledge about the vocal instrument is astounding! If you are a performer, please do yourself a favor and take a lesson with him. I promise it will be the best thing you've ever done for your voice!

As a coach, John has witty and unique ideas to help you work through your songs. He has first hand experience as a seasoned performer and it shows in his coaching abilities. Within a few weeks of lessons, he discovered some issues brewing with my vocal cords (based on past incorrect use) and quickly sent me on a path that has not only led to healing, but also major improvements in technique and vocal strength. It seems like every time I see John I have some sort of breakthrough with my voice and he is the reason. Not only am I improving at a constant rate, but I have so much more confidence in my vocal abilities. In addition to all of John's brilliance as a teacher/coach, he is a fabulous person who genuinely cares about his students and their progress. Not that you even need to ask for more, but he is also one of the most affordable instructors in SLC. I HIGHLY recommend FSFMA to anyone, of any level, looking for superior training!!

The search for me as a singer was long and treacherous, THEN THERE WAS JOHN!!! I have been singing and performing for years, but could never find the right vocal coach, and teacher that could help me hone in on my talents. From the first lesson with John, he read my voice like a book. He knew exactly what I needed and has been helping me reach my true potential. John has mastered working with my individual voice, rather than teaching "his technique." That is soooo rare to find in vocal coaching these days. Besides being a great teacher, he is just a model human being. ALWAYS positive and never judgmental. It can be very frustrating as a student to learn and understand the ways of the voice, but with John there is no pressure, just comfort and ease. I recommend him to ANYONE who either wants to learn the ways of their voice, or anyone who just needs someone to accompany them and get them ready for an audition. I could go on forever saying all the reasons I love John and his work, but you would probably stop reading! Don't think about it, ACT ON IT!!! FSFMA is the way to go!!

One word... GENIUS! If you are a singer in SLC, you need John in your life! I went to him off of the recommendation of a friend of mine, and it was the best decision I've made for my career yet. I would always strain and struggle to hit those notes on my "break", because I couldn't mix properly and every other vocal coach/voice teacher/voice therapist I've had has tried to help me get there with no avail. JOHN DID IT!! My voice FINALLY WORKS!!! His prices are beyond reasonable, and I got more out of the one hour with him than a month's worth of lessons with my other coaches. He allows you to feel comfortable to stumble through while you're finding your way, not like you're under the gun to get it right or helpless if you get it wrong. If you are looking for someone who will help you develop your voice in a safe, effective way, look no further. He's the BEST!!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

FSFMA was created in early 2012 to transmit the teachings of the best vocal instructors in the world, to the students in Utah and surrounding states. As a vocal coach, and having mastered these techniques and principles, I had been teaching these techniques to a small group of students in the Kaysville area. I realized that there was much more possibility. We have now decided to open an additional studio in Salt Lake City that would be more accessible to students in the Salt Lake Valley, and beyond. We feel like students shouldn't have to travel to New York to achieve vocal excellence. Our goal is to continue to glean the techniques of the world's best and most famous vocal coaches, and bring them to the Salt Lake Valley.
