Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Look at his work!! When you get an estimate from a contractor ask for the names, addresses and phone numbers of similar roof projects. Then, go see those jobs, if you like what you see then call the project owners and make sure they were happy. If he can't come up with a list then you should move on.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. If you look at other roofing contractors websites they all say the same thing- "slate and copper expert", "flat roof specialist", "shingle roof master". These websites typically have stock photos of roofs they didn't do but no pictures of work they did do; at the same time they sell siding, windows, sunrooms and solar panels. YoYo Ma doesn't practice on his cello and then a tuba; a truly great craftsman and artist wouldn't work in five different trades.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What do you like most about roofing?
How did you learn your trade?
Are there continuing ed classes for roofing?
Do you do any other types of work?
What would you do if this were your house?
