We've been creating custom decorative painting, faux finishes, and murals for your home for over 16 years in the DC metropolitan area. Ashley Spencer of Casart works closely with individual clients directly or through professional interior designers and decorating firms. Many of these popular decorative finishes are now available online as custom, removable, designer wallcoverings called Casart coverings.

Casart = art for your home and reinvents the concept of traditional wallpaper. Casart coverings allow for easy, hassle-free decorating with the convenience of being removed and reused whenever one chooses, like "slipcovers for your walls." All designs can be customized to customers' paint choices and even combined for extra personalization. The choices are limitless.

Ashley also provides color consultations, as well as fine art and illustrations with over 20 years professional experience.

I went to Ashley with an idea for an "antique map" mural for the ceiling of our study. She and I researched maps on the internet, agreed on an idea, and she went to work. The result is fabulous!! Ashley recommended I have the ceiling of the study painted to match the walls, and she matched the background of the map mural to the paint color, so it really looks as though the map is painted on the ceiling. Additionally, Ashley customized the border colors to match the rug in the room, and, to top it all off, she "framed" the mural in a faux wood frame. The whole thing is really beautiful, exactly what I envisioned...and then some!

I have wanted a tile backsplash in my kitchen for as long as I can remember, but I could never find either the perfect tiles or an installer I had a lot of confidence in. Ashley designed a faux tile backsplash for me using randomly placed flowers copied from my china pattern, and the result is stunning! The colors and design are so "me" - definitely a result of the personal time and attention Ashley put into the project! Her attention to detail is also very evident - the "grout" is the same color as my countertops, and she designed a border in that same color, so the overall effect is a custom made "backsplash" that you have to actually touch to know it's not real tile!

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Subtle, sophisticated, background finishes that enhance, not overwhelm décor, so the client's furnishings can stand out with the importance they deserve. I also do restoration work, where previous decorative finishes need repair. Custom commissions, such as mural work is personal, so painting and reproducing onto Casart coverings allows one to always have it as transportable art.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Write out a list of questions and have visual references of interiors that are appealing or with the look you are trying to achieve. Knowing what you do not like is also important.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Experience and ability to translate client's design needs with extreme professionalism, superior communication and customer service for sophisticated finishes that enhance, not overwhelm, interior spaces. Detail oriented and quick problem solver. Over 20 years as an artist working with the areas top interior designers and prep painters - all resource lists that I can pass onto my clients.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The one-on-one collaboration with clients, brainstorming decorating solutions, and artistic creation.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How much does it cost? There is not a catch-all answer as each client's project is unique and price is determined by the decorative painting treatment chosen, usually based on sf and difficulty to execute. Murals and illustrations are based on detail and time. Casart coverings - custom, designer, removable and reusable wallcovering requiring no paste or glue to install are based on $8 - $10 / sf. The advantages are: 1) the decorative painting has already been hand-painted and there is no disruption with paint or mess as with traditional wallpaper installation; 2) DIY and can be removed; 3) can be stored and reused seasonally, like "slipcovers for your walls;" 4) all designs can be combined and or customized to match paint choices; 5) custom commissions are also available.
