"Nadya has been taking pictures of our family every year since 1995. It has always been a pleasure to see and work with her every year. We are always amazed at the photos. She has really outdone herself this time as she just delivered our daughter's wedding package. We watched the video of the images about 100 times and finally had to tear ourselves away! If you are lucky enough to get on Nadya's schedule, you will be in for a treat."

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure you like their style of work. Look at examples, talk on the phone and make sure their is a connection. This can be particularly important if you are hiring a photographer for a wedding. You will spend many hours with your photographer and sometimes your photographer will be directing the event for part of the time.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. I guess make sure you are interested in artistic photography. I cannot and do not want to compete with the 20 minute photography studios. I love it when clients come in and want to truly create a special photo. Some of my favorite poses or shots have been when a client comes in with a photo from a magazine or website that they want to recreate. This allows me to really know what they are after and makes it fun. That being said, if you are unsure of exactly what you want I have many tricks up my sleeve.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I love taking photos and really enjoy getting to know my clients. My prices are affordable so that clients can return year after year and I can get to know everyone. I recently just took my first 'yearly' clients photos at their wedding. I believe this relationship I am able to develop with my 'regular or yearly' clients really does come through in the photos.

I also love going to the museums and scouring through artbooks to see what the great painters and photographers have done and how they manipulate the light. One of my favorite things to do is to incorporate nature into portraits in some way. Let me tell your story.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. What should I wear? The short answer is simple clothes that do not have a lot of logos or distracting features.

The long answer is...think about where you want to hang your photos. Are you going to print in color? Is this going to hang in your living room that is a certain color. Try to keep things harmonious if your answer was yes.

You cannot go wrong with some sort of combination of black and denim. Be careful of having one person in a group have pure white while. It can lead to skin tones being too white as the camera gets tricked.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. My profession is fun, but not always glamorous. When I return from a wedding, I am completely spent and sometimes need a full day to recover physically and emotionally. The stress of holding a camera up to your eye for hours on end is enormous and keeps my chiropractor busy.

Some of my favorite photos are when kids are not smiling. When they are serious or contemplative I believe you can see more of their personality in their eyes.

Please do not ask your kids to smile when a photographer is working with them. Nine times out of ten it leads to a cheesy smile.

Our job is so much more than the hour or so with the client. I tend to be a perfectionist so spend many hours behind the computer for every hour in front of a client.
