Introduction: First Paw Forward is Richmond's only holistic dog training. Holistic Dog Training encompasses the understanding of behavior, the teaching of skills, the assessment of subtle body energy, nutrition, and the exchange of energy/communication between animal and human. Dana uses an innovative “Elemental Approach” to prescribing balance in your dog. By applying the concept of elements, which are thriving and innate in all living things in nature, we have a greater perspective of harmony in your dog and what it takes to bring she or he into balance in order to live optimally. Dana has worked with easy dogs and problem dogs on every type of behavior issue. Her holistic approach is compassionate, wise, and filled with knowledge and common sense that will leave you feeling empowered in your relationship with your dog. More about what makes FPF different! *Knowledge. We know the difference between popular reality show fads, traditional trainers with outdated training methods, and modern, science-based, positive dog training that works. We can help you understand how to train correctly without sounding snobbish or demeaning. *Experience. We have worked with puppies through seniors and all breeds, and we know how to effectively communicate with our clients and can lead you to succeed in your goals. *Partnership. We have relationships with other positive dog professionals, and if it’s not our area of expertise, we can refer you to a trusted professional. *Integrity. We know we are changing lives, and we take that seriously! Our client relationships, our professionalism, and our commitment to the latest in science-based training methods is our priority. *We are people friendly! Not all dog trainers are, and that doesn’t make them bad trainers, but it can make it hard to work well with them.

Dana identified & solved our issue of getting our rescue dog, Tommy, to jump into the back of the SUV in less than 15 min. Amazing! It was a problem that had developed suddenly after one slight car sickness episode. Dana is extremely knowledgeable about dog behavior & training, gave us all sorts of useful tips. We would not hesitate to call her again or recommend her to anyone.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I attend seminars & workshops, read trade journals, am active in peer-led discussion groups and read books by industry leaders with science backgrounds.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I am a professional hobby breeder and it hurt my heart to see my puppies end up in horrible training classes where they were physically abused through aversive methods. Having a troubled dog at my home also initiated my quest to learn everything taught by experts on dog behavior.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always be your dog's advocate. Ask about training methods and tools used and continuing education. Progressive trainers use science-based learning theory that effectively trains your dog in a way that is force-free, dog-friendly, and Fun! Professional trainers also commit to continuing education through seminars, workshops and other professional resources. Find a trainer that you can build a rapport with, and if a training method makes you feel uncomfortable and doesn't build your relationship with your dog, seek an alternative.
