Au pairs provide up to 45 hours of live-in childcare for a very affordable fee - approximately $330/week. Au pairs can work days, evenings, nights and weekends - families determine the schedule that works best for them. Au pairs cannot work more than 10 hours per day. In addition, au pairs must have at least 1 day off each week and one full weekend off each month. In addition to providing childcare, au pairs can also perform duties related to the children - laundry, driving to activities, light housekeeping, etc.
Au pairs come from more than fifty countries and are interviewed, screened, their backgrounds verified and then approved by US-based staff. Families (host families) review au pair applications and conduct interviews in order to select the best au pair for their family. The staff can assist as much or as little as the family desires during the selection process. Once a family has found an au pair, the au pair is invited to come to the US and the Visa process begins in the au pair's home country. No fees are collected until a host family has selected an au pair - there is no risk to host families to start the process.
The au pair program is governed/regulated by the United States Department of State as a cultural exchange program which support young men and women coming to the US for up to two years and learning about life in America. This learning is in exchange for childcare.
We've had au pairs for more than 2 years and think very highly of the program. We've had experiences with two large agencies and were very disappointed. Au Pair Foundation (APF) is very different. Its smaller and much more personalized. The APF staff works very hard to ensure host families make the best match and that the au pairs will be happy during their time in the US.
APF is currently offering a $700 discount off the program fee for families that match before August 31, 2010. I'd love the opportunity to tell you about our experiences and to answer your questions. I hope to hear from you soon!
