Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Hiring an experienced designer with a track record of success is a smart investment. While my hourly rates and project totals may at first glance seem higher than some other designers, my experience, qualifications, speed and thoroughness more than pay for themselves. With Robert Mott & Associates, you get a thoroughly researched creative solution that positions you perfectly in your market. What's more, my projects tend to flow smoothly through the proofing and printing process, as my 25 years of professional experience has garnered valuable, practical experience. The bottom line: Like with any product or service, you get what you pay for. If you want to build a solid and compelling visual foundation for your company, your product or service, investing in the right designer can pay off handsomely.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Graphic Design services are not always a "work-for-hire" situations and it's important that you as the client understand what rights you are paying for when you contract for work. Of course a company logo or branding design would be completely owned by the buyer. However, items such as package designs, books covers, etc. are often priced based upon the intended market and usage (e.g. the cover and interior design of a self published cookbook with limited distribution will be priced quite differently from the cover design for a nationally distributed mass market hard- or softcover book). For all clients, I find it's helpful to ensure that we are all in agreement and have a common understanding of the rights extended by the creator of the intellectual property (in this case, the graphic designer) BEFORE the project fees are negotiated. Often times, a lower fee up front will ensure that if the design helps to sell a product that generates future product spinoffs (based on the same original look) the original designer should be compensated accordingly. Spelling this out ahead of time can save a lot of headaches!

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What other projects have you done similar to mine? Can I see examples? Who can I call to talk about your creative services and what it's like to work with you (i.e. give me some good references)? If this project isn't going the way I had hoped, what's your policy for project termination (i.e. kill fee)? What are the intellectual property rights, or copyrights, I am purchasing when I contract with your company for this project?
